Dutchess County Department of Public Works - Highway
2026 Salary: $70,390
This is a permanent position in the Dutchess County Department of Public Works- Highway
Division. This is a highly skilled position responsible for performing journey level equipment
mechanic work. The incumbent, independently or with others, repairs, maintains or modifies
highway construction and maintenance equipment, in accordance with accepted trade and safety
practices. The position differs from Construction Equipment Mechanic I in that a greater degree
of skill and specific knowledge of construction equipment is needed. The work is performed
under the general supervision of a higher level employee, with some leeway allowed in the
planning and performance of the details of activities. Some supervision or guidance may be
exercised over lower level mechanics or their helpers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Three (3) years of full-time skilled mechanical work experience which primarily involved the
repair of construction or heavy equipment.
NOTES:
1) Acceptable work experience must be of a full performance nature and not limited in
range as to type of repair performed.
2) Post high school education in the field of heavy equipment mechanics or a closely related
area may be substituted for the above work experience on a month-for-month basis up to
a maximum of two (2) years.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
1. Candidates must possess a valid New York State Class B Commercial Driver's License at
time of application and to maintain position. This license must have a CDL endorsement
for tanker vehicles and contain no restrictions other than those relating to personal
physical conditions. Such restrictions will be reviewed on a case by case basis for
compatibility with job duties and will not be an automatic bar to employment.
2. Candidates must obtain a valid Motor Vehicle Inspector’s license by the completion of
the probation period.
SPECIAL NOTE: Applicants for positions that require driving a commercial motor vehicle
(CMV) at any time will be required to undergo controlled substances and at our discretion,
alcohol testing prior to employment and will be subject to further testing throughout their period
of employment. Applicants will also be asked to sign forms for release of information from
previous employers in all cases where driving a CMV was one of your functions. Failure to sign
will prevent this employer from using you as a CMV driver.
FINGERPRINTING: A fingerprint supported background investigation is required before an
appointment is made to some positions. Pursuant to New York State Executive Law, the Division
of Criminal Justice Services requires that a fee accompany each such request for a search. It is
due once a job offer is made and accepted by the applicant.
