Grant Writer
Department/Program: Development

Reports to: Grants Manager
Employment: Full-time, Exempt

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8 am - 4 pm

Compensation: $65,000 - $80,000 per year, plus benefits

About the Role

Amos House is seeking a thoughtful, curious, and skilled Grant Writer to help sustain and grow programs that support people experiencing homelessness and poverty across Rhode Island.

The Grant Writer plays an important role in translating the impact of Amos House into compelling, well-researched, and data-informed proposals and reports that secure funding for housing, workforce development, recovery support, health care, and other essential services.

Working under the direction of the Grants Manager, this position partners across programs and departments to gather information, shape narratives, communicate outcomes, and support timely, compliant submissions. The ideal candidate is an excellent writer and collaborator who thrives in a mission-driven environment and can balance strategy, storytelling, organization, and deadlines.

What You’ll Do

Grant Strategy & Opportunity Development

Research and identify foundation, corporate, government, and other funding opportunities aligned with organizational priorities and strategic goals.
Monitor funding trends, Requests for Proposals (RFPs), and grant calendars to support a proactive grants pipeline.
Maintain systems to track prospective opportunities, submissions, reporting requirements, and deadlines.
Support planning conversations around funding strategy and positioning.

Proposal Development & Submission

Coordinate and manage grant development timelines across departments.
Research, write, edit, and submit high-quality grant proposals and related materials.
Develop compelling narratives that communicate community need, program design, outcomes, impact, and organizational strengths.
Partner with program, finance, and leadership teams to gather data, budgets, stories, and supporting documentation.
Ensure proposals meet funder requirements and are submitted accurately and on time.

Grant Stewardship & Reporting

Maintain organized grant files, templates, boilerplate language, and submission records.
Support completion of narrative grant reports and other funder communications.
Collaborate with internal teams, including data and program staff, to incorporate outcomes, evaluation measures, and performance metrics into proposals and reports.
Help ensure timely completion of reporting obligations and strong funder stewardship practices.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Build strong working relationships across departments to support information gathering and storytelling.
Contribute to continuous improvement of grants processes, templates, and internal systems.
Represent the Development team in a professional and collaborative manner.

What You Bring

Must-Haves

Bachelor’s degree in communications, English, public policy, nonprofit management, journalism, social sciences, or a related field; equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
Demonstrated ability to synthesize information and communicate complex ideas clearly and persuasively.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and SharePoint.

Nice-to-Haves

Two (2) years of experience in grant writing, fundraising, communications, proposal development, journalism, technical writing, public policy, or a related field.
Experience writing for nonprofit, government, health, human services, or community-based organizations.
Familiarity with grant management, CRM, or funding tracking systems.
Experience working with data, outcomes, and program evaluation measures.

Working Conditions

Work is primarily performed in a professional office environment with a combination of computer-based, independent, and collaborative work.
Position requires extended periods of sitting, reading, writing, and working at a computer.
Regular communication with staff across programs and departments is required to gather information, coordinate submissions, and support reporting needs.
Frequent shifting between multiple priorities and deadlines while maintaining attention to detail and accuracy.
Occasional local travel between Amos House locations may be required.
Occasional evening and weekend work may be necessary to meet grant submission deadlines or support organizational priorities.
