Provo City is looking for a part-time Librarian to perform entry-level professional library service in the Reference Division for library patrons including locating and selecting materials, and developing and running library programs. Qualified, civic-minded individuals are encouraged to apply.

What is the compensation?
Pay Rate: $19.00 - $24.96 per hour (depending on experience)

What are the main duties?
Assist patrons in selecting, locating, and using materials and equipment, including automated catalog and circulation systems and printed and online indexes and reference titles.
Conduct reference and Reader’s Advisory interviews in person or on the phone.
Create bibliographies and booklists to assist patrons with research/reference materials and to offer suggestions for various reading interests.
Resolve problems or refer to proper authority for resolution.
Assist in collection development through the review, selection, acquisition, and cataloging of materials that meet the library’s mission and goals.
Assist in planning, developing, and executing library programs, activities, services, and promotional ideas and materials.
Maintain regular contact with other employees, the general public, local schools, and other public libraries.
Attend conferences, seminars, and other training sessions
Provide general patron assistance.
Troubleshoot general office machinery and automated peripheral equipment problems
Perform other related duties as required
What requirements do I need to apply?
Provo City will honor equivalent combinations of job-related education and/or professional library experience.
Bachelor’s degree.
OR 2 years of professional librarian experience.
Requires extensive verbal and auditory skills for communicating with a broad variety of patrons.
A valid, lawful Driver License.
Spanish language skills preferred.
What are the hours?
This position is approximately 24 hours a week, Monday-Saturday, between the hours of 9:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m. This position will require working some evenings and weekends on a regular basis. Actual schedule to be determined by hiring manager based on department need.
What are the physical and environmental factors?
Requires travel to other libraries or public schools, pushing book carts, bending and shifting to rearrange library materials, long periods of answering telephones and data entry, standing or sitting at a computer or desk for long periods, communicating with a wide variety of patrons, occasional heavy lifting and carrying of library materials, and performing other varied physical activities associated with the essential job duties. Work is inside in an open area subject to constant public contact, telephone calls, and frequent noise. May include exposure to high-stress situations or environments, including, contact with the public in confrontational or unpleasant circumstances and stressful conditions related to the workplace.
What is the selection process?
Applications will be reviewed in the order they are submitted, with the first screening being held on July 7, 2026. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications listed above to be eligible for consideration. If selected for hire, candidate will be required to successfully pass a drug screen and criminal background check. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal. Applicants with unsatisfactory drug screen results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
