Sharkey Transportation seeks a Safety Assistant

Position Summary

The Safety Clerk supports the Safety and Compliance Department in a transportation environment by maintaining accurate safety records, assisting with regulatory compliance, and supporting driver and fleet safety programs. This role ensures proper documentation of incidents, inspections, and training in accordance with company policies and applicable DOT and OSHA regulations.

Key Responsibilities

Maintain and update safety records, logs, and compliance documentation for drivers, vehicles, and equipment
Assist in tracking and filing accident/incident reports, near-miss reports, and corrective actions
Support compliance with DOT (Department of Transportation) and FMCSA regulations
Maintain driver qualification files, inspection reports, and licensing documentation
Process and file vehicle inspection forms, maintenance records, and safety checklists
Assist in scheduling and documenting safety meetings, driver training, and compliance programs
Enter safety-related data into company systems and maintain accurate electronic and paper files
Support preparation for internal audits, DOT audits, and safety inspections
Communicate safety reminders, policy updates, and compliance notices to drivers and staff
Perform general administrative duties such as filing, copying, scanning, and correspondence

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required; additional training in transportation, logistics, or administration preferred
Previous clerical or administrative experience required; experience in transportation or safety compliance preferred
Basic understanding of DOT/FMCSA regulations (or willingness to learn)
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and data entry systems
Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills
Ability to handle confidential driver and company information
Good communication skills and attention to detail

Skills and Competencies

Strong accuracy in documentation and data entry
Knowledge or willingness to learn transportation safety compliance requirements
Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
Dependable, punctual, and detail-oriented
Strong teamwork and communication abilities
Problem-solving and follow-up skills

Work Environment

This position is primarily office-based within a transportation operations facility. Occasional interaction with drivers, dispatch, maintenance, and yard operations may be required. Some exposure to a busy logistics environment is expected.

Pay: $16.00 - $21.00 per hour
