Full Job Description

Job Overview

Fully remote (U.S.). No busy-season hours. $140,000–$165,000 base plus discretionary bonus. Active CPA license required. This role requires availability 9:00am–5:00pm Pacific.

Brunner Accounting is a remote CPA firm that takes the entire back office — bookkeeping, tax compliance, proactive planning, and HR — off the plates of growing business owners. We're hiring a Senior Tax Manager to own the quality and the flow of everything we deliver.

You'll be our technical authority: final review and sign-off on individual and business returns, plus hands-on preparation of the complex ones. This is not a review-only chair. You'll also lead a production team of eight and keep the workflow predictable and on time. Our Client Relationship Manager owns the client relationships, so there's no sales quota and no book to bring.

Deep, current California tax experience is the one thing we won't bend on. Our client base is California-concentrated.

What you'll do

Tax leadership (about 50%)

Final review and sign-off on individual and business returns
Prepare complex individual and business returns yourself when the work calls for it
Review multi-state and California returns, S-corps, partnerships, and other entity types
Review planning analyses, quarterly estimates, and pass-through entity tax calculations
Perform and direct tax research; coach staff through technical issues

People leadership (about 30%)

Lead six offshore bookkeeping professionals, one offshore tax professional, and one U.S.-based tax professional
Coach and develop the team, run performance reviews, and recommend promotions and staffing
Build and maintain SOPs; monitor productivity, quality, and utilization

Bookkeeping oversight (about 20%)

Ensure accurate reconciliations and clean month-end closes
Coordinate hand-offs between the bookkeeping and tax teams so financial data is tax-ready

What we're looking for

Active CPA license (any state — we're fully remote)
Around 10 years of public accounting and tax experience with a real review track record
Deep, current California tax experience across individual and business returns
Strong pass-through (1120S, 1065), individual, and multi-state expertise
Experience leading and developing a team, including remote or offshore staff
Confident working in QuickBooks Online and reading financial statements
Available to work 9:00am–5:00pm Pacific, regardless of where you're based

Not a focus for this role: trust and estate, nonprofit, ASC 740 provisions, or fund and private equity taxation.

Your first year

By 90 days: you own the review process and know the team, the workflow, and the client book.
By 6 months: SOPs documented and tightened, quality and turnaround trending up.
By 12 months: a measurably more accurate, faster, more self-sufficient production team.
