Department Summary: Virginia Commonwealth University's Technology Services division has an exciting opportunity for an IT Systems Analyst to join our team. Duties & Responsibilities:
The Applications Analyst supports the deployment and maintenance of VCU’s mission-critical Building Automation System (BAS) servers, databases, and applications. The role serves as an information technology solutions architect, blending deployment planning and execution with software implementation and hands‐on technical support to ensure the security, reliability, and performance of Facilities systems.
Reporting to the Director of Business Application and Integration Services and receiving guidance from Facilities Management (FMD) staff, the Applications Analyst contributes to application deployment and updates, server lifecycle planning, integrations, and daily technical operations. This position is designed for an early‐career analyst who is excited about applying their technical skills in a cross-functional environment—someone who seeks a collaborative environment where they can directly support mission-critical environmental and safety systems across the university. Core Responsibilities
Server and Application Support
- Contribute to the planning, implementation, and maintenance of commercial software and system integrations as part of the technical team.
- Participate in server architecture planning and deployments utilizing established team and VCU best practices.
- Support integrations with university authentication systems (CAS, SSO, OAuth) and third‐party services.
- Maintain and enhance existing servers and applications with attention to performance, stability, and long‐term maintainability.
- Participate in environment management, deployment workflows, and version control processes following established procedures.
- Provide support for internal applications and software used across FMD.
- Ensure BAS systems align with university standards, best-practices, and security policies.
IT Operations & Platform Support
- Provide support for FMD's BAS applications, custom implementations, and reporting tools.
- Provide support for FMD embedded (IoT) device management, including coordination with vendors and central IT teams for device registration and onboarding, security, and decommissioning.
- Provide support for other internal or third‐party services.
- Assist with server operations, deployments, backups, and incident‐response workflows in coordination with senior team members.
- Coordinate with the University Computer Center, Network Services, and other central IT teams on infrastructure, security, and access control for supported systems.
- Contribute to compliance tasks related to IT governance, accessibility, security reviews, and application inventory updates.
Collaboration, Documentation, & Team Support
- Collaborate daily with a cross‐functional team.
- Contribute to operations efforts through both independent work and collaborations with peers.
- Translate technical concepts for non‐technical collaborators and stakeholders.
- Maintain clear, useful documentation for systems, workflows, and other support processes.
- Provide occasional guidance or support to internal users on system features, tools, or processes.
Innovation & Continuous Improvement
- Stay informed about evolving server and application technologies, best practices, and tools.
- Recommend improvements to workflows, technical infrastructure, and project execution (features, innovations, sustainability).
- Contribute ideas that enhance system performance and decrease maintenance requirements.
- Pilot small‐scale solutions or prototypes that support team and division goals.
Minimum Qualifications
In addition to the following, the selected candidate must be able to work Monday - Friday 8am - 5pm (Eastern Time Zone) as well as occasional on-call or schedules outside normal business hours.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent training and experience.
Experience working in higher education, government, or other regulated environments.
2-3 years of experience deploying and configuring Windows servers.
Demonstrated experience with relational databases (SQL preferred).
Demonstrated experience creating and implementing server architecture plans.
Demonstrated ability to translate business requirements into functional technical specifications and implement solutions with stakeholders and vendors.
Ability to support ongoing maintenance, updates, and improvements to existing applications.
Willingness to assist with deployments, backups, and incident‐response workflows under senior guidance.
Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a diverse, cross‐functional environment.

Preferred Qualifications
2–3 years of experience supporting Building Automation Systems (Tridium Niagara, Siemens, Johnson Controls, etc.), CMMS (AiM, Maximo, etc.), or comparable facilities management software.
Experience with Microsoft SQL Server and SQL code.
Experience integrating third‐party APIs or enterprise data services.
Understanding of authentication systems (CAS, SSO, OAuth).
Experience working within a cross‐functional team.
Salary Range: $76,000 - $96,000
