Full Job Description

As a Staff Attorney at Mississippi United to End Homelessness (MUTEH), you will play a crucial role in providing legal assistance and advocacy to low-income veterans who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness. Your primary responsibilities will include conducting client intakes, providing legal advice and representation, and collaborating with other agencies and organizations to address the legal needs of our veteran clients.

Key Responsibilities:

Client Intake and Assessment:

Conduct initial interviews and intake assessments with veteran clients to identify their legal needs and concerns.
Gather relevant information and documents to evaluate each client's case.
Determine eligibility for legal assistance based on program guidelines and criteria.

Legal Advice and Representation:

Provide comprehensive legal advice and counsel to veteran clients on a range of legal issues, including housing, benefits, consumer rights, family law, criminal defense, expungements, and employment.
Prepare and file legal documents, including complaints, motions, and appeals, on behalf of clients.
Represent clients in administrative hearings, mediation sessions, and court proceedings as needed.
Negotiate settlements and agreements with opposing parties to resolve legal disputes in the best interest of clients.

Case Management and Advocacy:

Develop and implement individualized legal strategies to address the unique needs and circumstances of veteran clients.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date case records, including notes, correspondence, and case outcomes.
Advocate for clients' rights and interests by engaging with landlords, government agencies, creditors, and other stakeholders on their behalf.
Collaborate with social service providers, veterans' organizations, and community partners to coordinate holistic support services for clients.

Outreach and Education:

Conduct outreach activities to raise awareness of available legal services and resources for veterans experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness.
Deliver educational presentations and workshops on relevant legal topics to veteran groups, community organizations, and service providers.
Develop informational materials and resources to empower veterans to navigate the legal system effectively.

Qualifications:

Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing with the state bar.
Minimum of 2-3 years of experience practicing law, preferably with a focus on civil legal aid, housing law, criminal defense, veterans' rights, or related areas.
Strong understanding of legal issues affecting low-income populations, including veterans, and familiarity with relevant statutes, regulations, and case law.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to effectively advocate for clients and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
Compassionate and client-centered approach to legal representation, with a commitment to promoting access to justice and social equity.
Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Prior experience working with veterans or individuals experiencing homelessness is desirable but not required.
Fluency in additional languages, especially Spanish or American Sign Language, is a plus.
