ABOUT POMONA COLLEGE: Pomona College, established in 1887, is the founding college of the Claremont Colleges, a consortium of five undergraduate institutions and two graduate institutions in Claremont, CA, on the eastern edge of Los Angeles County. Pomona College has a comprehensive liberal arts curriculum spanning the arts, humanities, social sciences, math and sciences, emphasizing critical thinking and high-impact practices. Pitzer College, established in 1963, was founded as an innovative liberal arts institution, initially specializing in social and behavioral sciences, but has since expanded to other fields. Pitzer’s academic programs emphasize social justice, intercultural understanding, and environmental sensitivity. The 21 varsity Pomona-Pitzer Athletic teams comprise of students from both colleges, and compete in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) and the NCAA Division III. The Colleges have a combined enrollment of 2,600 students.
JOB PURPOSE: The Assistant Athletic Trainer works to prevent athletic injuries and illness, evaluate and treat athletic injuries, and assist with the coordination and scheduling of medical coverage for contests and practices. This position also assists with the overall operation and administration of the Sports Medicine Department. This position may be asked to supervise one or more student employees in the Physical Education/Athletics department.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Reporting directly to the Head Athletic Trainer(s), the Assistant Athletic Trainer works independently and collaboratively to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities for the Pomona-Pitzer varsity student-athletes:
Prevent, treat, and rehabilitate athletic injuries.
Provide medical coverage for practices and games.
Provide counseling and education to student-athletes.
Document and maintain injury reports and progress notes in a timely manner.
Administration of athletic insurance claims in a timely manner.
Oversee athletic training students and assist with athletic training interns and their oversight.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Master’s degree preferred.
Licenses/Certificates: Certification from the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) required. CPR/AED required. A valid driver’s license is required or an equivalent means of reliable transportation to off-site meetings and events.
Experience: Experience at an academic institution is preferred.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND CRITICAL SKILLS: This position must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the job or must be able to demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed (with or without reasonable accommodation) using other knowledge, skills, and abilities not listed below.
1. Deploy professional skills in athletics first aid, injury prevention and rehabilitation, and athletics training, in collaboration with colleagues, to best promote the Colleges’ strategic interests.
2. Demonstrate effective, accurate, and clear communication with excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, reading, phone, customer service, and leadership skills to supervise, facilitate, motivate, and inspire a highly diverse group of student employees. Follow all written and verbal instructions, asking questions as needed for clarification of projects/tasks/duties/assignments.
3. Operate computers proficiently with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, Outlook) and associated professional software. Use assigned technology/devices/equipment to achieve annual goals and maintain confidentiality.
4. Handle all activities and highly confidential information with patience, discretion, good judgment, courtesy, and tact while working with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.
5. Prioritize and perform multiple projects/tasks, meet deadlines/timelines, respond to others in a timely manner, and work both independently and as a collaborative member of the Colleges, with a high standard of integrity and ethics, in support of the Colleges’ strategic visions and the division’s/department’s annual goals.
6. Use exceptional/strong organizational and time management skills to complete work with accuracy and a keen attention to detail.
7. Working in an Athletic environment requires prolonged standing, sitting, kneeling, and stooping.
8. Work collaboratively with coaches and other members of the department.
9. Demonstrate commitment to inclusion, community, diversity, and gender equity.
REQUIRED HOURS: Regular hours may vary due to the needs of athletic teams and the Sports Medicine Department. Travel may be required. Must be willing to work extensive evening and weekend hours and holidays.
ADDITIONAL POSITION DETAILS: This is a regular, full-time, exempt position, benefits eligible. The yearly salary for this role is between $70,304 - $78,000 per year. The specific factors that the College will consider when offering a salary to an individual will include, but not be limited to: education, training, relevant prior experience, and performance in prior role. All staff positions are ineligible for visa or permanent resident card sponsorship. As a California employer, Pomona College requires all employees to be residents of California.
