Full Job Description

Company Overview: Hal Hays Construction, Inc. is a dynamic and award-winning mid-size, family-owned construction company with nine entities, $100M in combined revenue, and operations across four states. We've been building the West since 1991. Heavy civil, commercial, electrical, traffic control, equipment, transportation. If it gets built, we've probably touched it.

Position Summary: We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Accounting Controller to join our finance team in Riverside, CA. Our accounting department needs a leader. Not a title-holder. A leader. We need someone who can walk in, take ownership of the books across all nine companies, and actually run things. Close the month. Reconcile the intercompany. Chase the receivable. Fix the process. Train the team. Hold the meeting. Follow up on Monday when someone said they'd have it by Friday.

**This is a hands-on role.** You will own the general ledger, oversee AP and AR, manage accounting staff, and be responsible for everything from monthly close to year-end financials. Intercompany billing, equipment depreciation, amortization schedules, job cost reporting, multi-state tax compliance. It's complex, it's dynamic, and it needs someone who's sharp enough to untangle it and organized enough to keep it straight.

FLSA Classification: Exempt (Salary)

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

Full ownership of the general ledger across all Hays Group entities, including monthly close, journal entries, and balance sheet reconciliations
Oversight and management of the AP department (AP Manager and clerks), AR function, and staff accounting
Intercompany billing, allocations, and reconciliations across nine entities with shared equipment, labor, fuel, and overhead
Year-end financial statement preparation and close
Fixed asset and depreciation schedules, equipment loan amortization schedules, and quarterly reconciliation against Sage
Cash receipt postings and AR aging management, including proactive collections follow-up and escalation of past-due accounts
Credit card reconciliation and expense allocation across entities and job costs
State tax filings and compliance (including Arizona TPT and multi-state obligations) -- either performed directly or supervised
Weekly and monthly status reporting on department KPIs: open invoices, unapplied cash, aging buckets, unbilled revenue, and jobs with cost but no billings
Supervision and development of accounting staff, including conducting regular team meetings, setting expectations, and holding people accountable

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Accounting. CPA designation is preferred.
12+ years in accounting, with real construction experience (not "I once worked near a job site")
Sage 100. Non-negotiable.
You understand job costing, WIP, progress billings, T&M, and percentage-of-completion
You've managed intercompany transactions across multiple entities
You've led a team and actually held people accountable
You're willing to embrace AI and automation (we're modernizing, and we need you on board with that)
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other MS Office applications.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex financial data and provide strategic recommendations.
Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate financial information to both finance and non-finance professionals.
Detail-oriented and highly organized, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Physical Demands, Screen Time & Ergonomics

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
Frequent use of keyboard, mouse, and telephone
Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, heavy equipment, noise, dust, and fumes
Requires regular use of a computer, which entails looking at a monitor for extended periods; employer provides ergonomic workstations and rest breaks in accordance with California law
Occasional reaching, bending or lifting of small packages or files up to 20-25 lbs

Work Environment

The employee will use a computer for most of the day in a well-lit, ventilated area. Noise levels are low to moderate. Close exposure to computer screens is constant in this role. The position may require moving between different office locations or floors (e.g., taking stairs).
