Full Job Description

Commonwealth UniServ Office is seeking applicants for the position of Administrative Assistant. Commonwealth UniServ is an affiliate of the Virginia Education Association, a statewide community of more than 40,000 teachers and school support professionals working for the betterment of public education in the Commonwealth. Commonwealth UniServ supports the local education associations of Alleghany Highlands, Botetourt Co., Craig Co, Franklin Co., Roanoke City, Roanoke Co., and Salem.

The Administrative Assistant reports to the UniServ Council Chair, and the office is in Roanoke Virginia. The Administrative Assistant is responsible for performing work for the UniServ Council as well as providing support to the unit’s UniServ Director.

Primary responsibilities of the position include answering the telephone, routine correspondence, maintaining electronic membership data, managing the office printer, assisting VEA Staff, and other general administrative duties.

The ideal candidate will have excellent oral and written communication skills, superior attention to detail, high-level organizational skills, strong interpersonal skills, and experience in experience in office management, and familiarity with the work labor unions do to represent their members. Must be proficient with Microsoft Office programs, and willing to train on VEA software.

High school diploma required with a minimum of one year of related experience. An understanding and appreciation for the role of public education in today’s society is highly desirable.

Hourly rate based on background and experience. This position with the right candidate will work part-time at 25-30 hours a week. Starting salary is $17/hr. with no benefits.
