Position: Paralegal

The position involves significant substantive legal work, including legal research, drafting, discovery management, and motion practice under an attorney. Serves as the first point of escalation for Legal Assistants. We are looking for a detail-oriented, efficient candidate who projects our firm's values, with good oral and written English language skills. Candidates must be empathetic and good with people from a diverse range of backgrounds. Skills in a language other than English are preferred but not required.

Key Responsibilities:

Ensuring the case file is complete for attorney review and drafting inlcuding identifying and remedying any gaps left by the Legal Assistant's document collection so that a complaint or demand letter can be filed or sent on schedule
Running case chronologies (e.g., Eve Case Chronologies) and cite-checking all substantive allegations
Segregating and flagging key documents for attorney follow-up
Drafting or delegating complaint and demand letter workflows, and delivering a draft to the attorney once the case file is complete
Conducting procedural legal research
Drafting shells of motions, subpoenas, and offensive discovery in a timely manner
Drafting objections and responses to discovery, and communicating with clients as needed to respond to discovery
Owning discovery management such as ensuring deadlines are met, overseeing subpoenas and proper service, and reviewing incoming discovery for obvious deficiencies (e.g., missing verifications, privilege logs, or ESI)
Preparing charts or analyses of discovery deficiencies at attorney request
Overseeing first drafts and shells of substantive motion practice (motions to compel, MSJ oppositions, etc.) and ensuring they are timely and comply with venue/department filing requirements
Handling e-filing and service of discovery and motion documents
Conducting client and witness calls, interviewing witnesses, and preparing declarations
Sending monthly case status update emails to clients and answering client status questions, escalating strategy or legal advice questions to attorneys
Providing guidance, training, and quality control over Legal Assistant work product, and serving as the primary point of escalation for procedural questions, technology or system issues, peer conflicts, and workflow issues
Spot-checking file and docket compliance and overseeing accurate deadline-keeping at a high level
Tracking and ensuring case budgets and expenses are entered accurately

Applicant qualifications include:

Proficiency in Microsoft Office products including Word and SharePoint; ability to format legal documents and assemble document parts for uniformity of presentation; advanced knowledge of Word Styles and formatting features is preferred, but training can be provided
Ability to quickly and accurately proofread and review work product for formatting and typos
Familiarity with working in template documents
Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to quickly learn relevant legal principles
Ability to demonstrate sound ethics, judgment, and maintain the confidentiality of information
Ability to relate to people from varied backgrounds and fields of work
At least two years of experience working as a paralegal or legal assistant in a litigation field. Paralegals with experience working at employment or personal injury firms are preferred. Trial experience will lead to a higher rate of pay.
