Full Job Description

Position Summary

Working in CRIHBs Public Health Department The Health Education Specialist I will provide leadership and coordination in outreach to target communities. Additionally, we will develop and implement health education activities in a team-focused approach with other department staff to facilitate the completion of all program activities. Activities associated with health education programs include but are not limited to coordinating and delegating training events, developing educational material, assisting in evaluation activities, providing informational presentations, serving as representative with various workgroups, networks, and/or task forces, etc.

Essential Functions

Conducts and coordinates activities related to the designated Project.
Assists in evaluation activities, including, but not limited to, survey taking, conducting key informant interviews, etc., on an as-needed basis.
Provides training and technical assistance to tribal organizations, health clinics, and American Indian community members, including in the education and distribution of critical tools and information.
Disseminates updated information to project participants as needed and/or requested.
Obtains data regarding the health status of American Indians, including but not limited to physical conditions, social and cultural influences, behavioral risk factors, and programs and individuals offering services.
Serves as a health education resource to tribal organizations, American Indian organizations, as well as other professional organizations that serve American Indians and their communities.
Communicates health education needs, concerns, and resources regarding American Indian populations.
Acts as representative with various statewide workgroups, networks, and/or task forces.
Pursue funding opportunities to sustain and expand program activities, resources, and longevity.
Prepares and disseminates all necessary program reports.
Monitors specifically funded program activities and special projects, as assigned.
Regular and predictable attendance.
Performs other related duties as required and assigned.

Additional Responsibilities

Position may require 50-60% travel throughout California.
Maintain a valid, unrestricted driver’s license and ability to be insurable under CRIHB’s automobile insurance.
Requires the ability to drive up to seven (7) hours a day.
Position may require occasional overnight travel within CRIHB’s service area

Qualifications

CRIHB recognizes equivalent combinations of education and progressively responsible experience; however, a high school diploma or equivalent remains the minimum educational requirement for employment.

Bachelor’s degree in Health Education, Public Health, or a related field is required, and a minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible professional experience, including two (2) years in a specialized or relevant function such as health education, health promotion, or disease prevention.
- In lieu of a bachelor’s degree, applicants must have four (4) additional years of relevant professional experience (total of eight (8) years), including at least two (2) years in a related health education or public health function.
Master’s degree in Public Health, Health Education, or a related field is preferred.
- In lieu of a master’s degree, applicants must have two (2) additional years of progressively responsible experience beyond the bachelor’s baseline (total of six (6) years), including at least three (3) years in a health education or program coordination capacity.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Demonstrated experience in implementing health promotion and disease prevention programs.
Ability to develop and deliver educational materials and workshops for diverse audiences, using culturally and linguistically appropriate approaches.
Advanced interpersonal communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to build trust and work effectively with community partners, Tribal organizations, and public health staff.
Strong presentation, writing, and public speaking skills.
Experience in public health, health education, or program evaluation is preferred.
Experience with Tribal health systems, nonprofit organizations, or public-sector health programs preferred.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Office 365, and other standard office or data management software.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while managing multiple projects or educational initiatives.
Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines.
Commitment to confidentiality, equity, and American Indian self-determination.

Cultural Competency
This position requires an awareness and a profound respect for American Indian / Alaska Native traditions, customs, and socioeconomic contexts. It also requires the ability to work effectively with Tribal organizations, demonstrating tact, courtesy, discretion, resourcefulness, and sound judgment when handling sensitive matters.

Preference in hiring is extended to qualified American Indians or Alaska Native applicants in accordance with CRIHB’s Indian Preference policy, as provided under Title 25 U.S.C. § 5307(b).
