Full Job Description

Medical Assistant

Position Summary

Prepares charts and physical facilities for patient visits. Provides routine medical advice to patients by phone. Establishes helpful and friendly relationships with patients.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

Check examining rooms daily & clean stock as required.
Help providers to stay on schedule by efficiently and quickly preparing examining rooms for patients.
Prepare patients for the providers (ex. weight, height, tests as necessary, etc.)
Clean examining room after patient leaves.
Carry out provider orders (ex. give injections, make appointments, clean wounds, do testing, etc.)
Assist providers with exams and treatments.
Screen incoming calls – decide if provider needs to see or call patient.
Inform parents how to care for and what to expect from well and sick children.
Periodically check the entire work area, including waiting rooms, restrooms, kitchen, etc.
Record lab test results in patient charts and contact patients as necessary regarding tests.
Contact pharmacies to authorize prescribed medication for patients.
Pull and process patient charts for the next day.
Thoroughly clean and stock each examination room weekly.
Make patient appointments.
Participate in educational activities and attending staff meetings
Maintain strictest confidentiality, adhering to all HIPAA guidelines and regulations
Arrange daily activities based on urgency of requests for fluid samples.
Identify patients and their personal information using their ID, documents, or other means.
Determine the right venipuncture method based on patient age, health etc.
Reassure patients and help them relax.
Find veins that are suitable for puncture.
Draw blood using sterilized needles, vials, and other equipment.
Ensure optimal quality and quantity of samples.
Label samples correctly and send or deliver them for testing.
Answer patient questions and provide useful information.
Keep accurate records on fluid specimens and tests.
Adhere to all relevant health and safety standards while working.
Perform filing, phone duty, kitchen clean-up, and other work-related duties as assigned by Office Manager.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

Graduate from an accredited medical assistant/phlebotomy program.
Fluent in English & Spanish required.
Knowledge of basic medical coding and practices.
Knowledge and ability to operate Athenahealth EHR and all MS Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) preferred.
Ability to operate a multi-line telephone system.
Must have a pleasant phone technique, like children, and be very understanding of patient’s fears and needs.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees, and the public in general.
Must be well organized and detail oriented.
