Senior Transmission Line Engineer - California PE (preferred, not required) – Fully Remote – 4 openings
Overhead Transmission Design | PLS-CADD | PLS-TOWER | Remote Within California
Senior Transmission Line Engineer to lead and perform engineering for overhead electric transmission projects throughout California. The successful candidate will independently execute transmission-line design, provide technical leadership and quality control, mentor junior staff, and interface directly with utility and consulting clients. This role is intended for a California-licensed Professional Engineer with strong PLS-CADD capability and substantial experience delivering high-voltage transmission projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead route development, plan-and-profile design, structure spotting, clearance analysis, sag-tension analysis, and constructability evaluation for overhead transmission lines.
- Develop and review PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, and PLS-TOWER models, including design criteria, weather cases, load cases, structure usage, and design documentation.
- Perform or oversee analysis and design of lattice towers, tubular steel poles, wood poles, foundations, conductors, shield wires, insulators, and line hardware.
- Prepare and seal engineering calculations, design drawings, technical specifications, reports, material lists, scopes, estimates, and construction packages as authorized.
- Apply NESC, California GO 95, ASCE, IEEE, OSHA, utility standards, and project-specific design criteria.
- Lead technical reviews, interdisciplinary coordination, design-change management, and QA/QC activities.
- Coordinate with civil, structural, electrical, geotechnical, survey, environmental, permitting, right-of-way, construction, and project-management teams.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related discipline from an accredited program.
- Active California Professional Engineer license in good standing (preferred, not required).
- Seven or more years of relevant transmission-line engineering experience, including substantial overhead-line design responsibility.
- Demonstrated proficiency with PLS-CADD and working knowledge of PLS-POLE and/or PLS-TOWER.
- Experience with high-voltage transmission facilities, generally 69 kV through 500 kV.
- Strong knowledge of sag-tension, conductor clearances, structure loading, line geometry, foundation coordination, and transmission deliverables.
- Ability to independently produce, review, and approve high-quality engineering work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ten or more years of transmission-line engineering experience.
- Direct experience with SDG&E, SCE, PG&E, LADWP, SMUD, or another California utility.
- Advanced PLS-TOWER, PLS-POLE, structure-design, and foundation-design experience.
- Experience with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, GIS, Bluebeam, Microsoft Project, and utility document-control systems.
- Experience serving as Engineer of Record, discipline lead, project engineer, or technical manager.
- Experience with EPC, owner’s engineer, staff augmentation, wildfire mitigation, system hardening, reconductoring, rebuild, or greenfield projects.
- Existing California utility relationships and familiarity with utility contracting environments.
