Ophthalmic Technician

Practice: Clairemont Optometry Myopia Treatment Center
Location: San Diego, California
Employment Type: Full-Time or Part-Time
Reports To: Office Manager and Doctors

Position Summary

We are seeking a dependable, friendly, and detail-oriented Pretester / Ophthalmic Technician to join our optometry team. This position plays an important role in preparing patients for their examinations by gathering accurate medical information, performing preliminary testing, and helping patients feel comfortable and cared for throughout their visit.

Our practice provides comprehensive eye care with a special focus on pediatric myopia management, orthokeratology, specialty contact lenses, and advanced diagnostic testing. Previous eye-care experience is preferred, but we are willing to train the right candidate who is responsible, eager to learn, and comfortable working with both children and adults.

Primary ResponsibilitiesPatient Intake and Pretesting

Greet patients warmly and explain each step of the pretesting process.
Review and update the patient's medical history, medications, allergies, and reason for visit.
Accurately document information in the electronic medical record.
Measure visual acuity at distance and near.
Perform lensometry on the patient's current glasses.
Perform autorefraction, keratometry, and non-contact or handheld tonometry.
Conduct color vision, depth perception, pupil, and other preliminary testing as directed.
Prepare examination rooms and ensure patients are ready for the doctor.

Diagnostic Testing

After appropriate training, perform testing such as:

Optomap retinal imaging
OCT retinal and optic nerve imaging
Corneal topography
Axial-length measurements
Visual field testing
Anterior-segment imaging
Intraocular pressure measurements
Specialty testing for myopia management, glaucoma, and contact-lens patients

Ensure that all testing is completed accurately, properly labeled, saved, and available for the doctor to review.

Patient Care and Education

Communicate clearly and patiently with children, parents, adults, and elderly patients.
Explain testing procedures in a calm and reassuring manner.
Assist children who may be nervous or have difficulty completing testing.
Reinforce doctor-approved instructions regarding contact lenses, medications, follow-up visits, and treatment plans.
Escalate patient concerns, unusual findings, or testing difficulties to the doctor promptly.
Maintain patient privacy and follow HIPAA requirements at all times.

Clinical and Office Support

Clean and disinfect equipment and examination areas between patients.
Restock examination rooms and notify the appropriate team member when supplies are low.
Help maintain an organized, clean, and professional clinical environment.
Assist with contact-lens handling instruction when trained and directed.
Help keep the patient schedule moving efficiently while maintaining high-quality care.
Communicate delays, testing problems, and patient concerns to the doctor and office manager.
Provide occasional front-desk or general office support when needed.
Complete additional duties assigned by the doctors or office manager.

QualificationsRequired

High school diploma or equivalent.
Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established procedures.
Friendly, professional, and patient-centered communication skills.
Comfortable working with children and their parents.
Basic computer skills and willingness to learn an electronic medical record system.
Ability to multitask while maintaining accuracy.
Reliable attendance and punctuality.
Ability to communicate effectively with doctors, coworkers, and patients.
Willingness to learn new equipment and clinical procedures.

Preferred

Prior experience in an optometry, ophthalmology, medical, dental, or healthcare office
Experience performing ophthalmic testing or working as an optometric technician.
Familiarity with OCT, visual fields, retinal imaging, corneal topography, or axial-length testing.
Experience with pediatric patients or contact-lens patients.
Bilingual ability is helpful but not required.

Physical Requirements

Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and move between testing and examination rooms throughout the workday.
Ability to operate ophthalmic instruments and computer equipment.
Ability to assist patients with positioning during testing.
Ability to occasionally lift or move supplies weighing approximately 20 pounds.
Ability to work at a computer and view detailed images for extended periods.

Schedule

The position include Monday and Tuesday and occasional Saturdays, depending on the practice schedule.

The employee must be available to arrive on time, remain for the complete scheduled shift, and provide advance notice regarding scheduling conflicts whenever possible.

Compensation and Benefits
