PCI Ecological (PCI) is seeking a Restoration/Landscape Foreman to join our team in Sebastopol, California. PCI is a small, multi-disciplinary firm that specializes in ecological restoration throughout Northern California. Our team of scientists, planners, landscape architects, engineers, and construction staff work collaboratively to produce high quality outcomes for our clients. The ideal candidate will be a be self-motivated, team-oriented, and experienced in implementing landscape construction and restoration efforts safely, effectively, and efficiently. The Restoration/Landscape Foreman will supervise, coordinate, and actively work with PCI’s field crew to implement projects including landscape construction, restoration projects, earthwork, planting, irrigation, plant maintenance, erosion control, fuel management, and related work in open space and wildland environments. The Restoration/Landscape Foreman will occasionally operate equipment as necessary for projects. When not operating equipment, they are expected to work alongside crews to assist with non-equipment field work, including manual labor tasks. In addition to field work, the foreman may assist with project management related tasks, including materials procurement, preparation of cost estimates, and monitoring and reporting on project progress. The Restoration/Landscape Foreman will primarily work closely with PCI’s Construction Manager and Project Leader, and may work with other PCI Project Managers, and Designers.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Project Supervision and Execution:
· Directly supervise crew for private and public landscape and restoration projects that include varying degrees of complexity and tasks, such as habitat feature construction, grading and equipment work, rock installation work, revegetation planting, irrigation installation, plant maintenance, and erosion control work.
· Operate earthmoving equipment (e.g., excavator, skid steer, wheel loader, grading equipment).
· Read and interpret landscape and restoration installation plans to the level required for basic layout, understanding of construction details and takeoffs.
· Help identify approaches to site challenges and problem-solving in the field in coordination with the Construction Manager.
· Inspect work for accuracy and adherence to specifications.
· Maintain a safe, clean, and organized job site.
· Implement resource protection measures such as stormwater pollution prevention and nest buffers.
· Manage inquiries from clients and others that visit the project site while representing PCI and the project in a professional manner.
· Review site conditions after implementation, identify and report on factors such as plant health and establishment, areas of erosion concern, and irrigation system status.
Safety Program Assistance:
· Conduct daily safety meetings, equipment inspections, and enforce PCI safety protocols.
· Support safety compliance, including third-party safety training and documentation.
· Report to Construction Manager or Project Leader on changed regulations, requirements, and known safety compliance issues.
· Coordinate Underground Service Alert (USA) tickets for excavation and maintain records of safety-related activities.
· Draft and update Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) forms and ensure compliance with safety regulations and client-specific requirements.
Materials and Equipment:
· Assist with procurement of materials and equipment, ensuring timely and cost-effective acquisition.
· Assist in management and maintenance of PCI equipment.
· Keep Construction Manager informed of repair and purchasing needs and seek approval for expenditure beyond normal annual and monthly maintenance spending.
Administrative Support & Documentation:
· Provide general administrative support to the Construction Group Manager or Construction Project Leader, including scheduling, forecasting, record keeping, and internal and external communications.
· Assist with project management tasks, including tracking project progress and reporting to Construction Manager.
· Process and manage paperwork, including timesheets, receipts, supervisor reports, job hazard analyses, daily safety reports, and mileage logs. Construction Manager will make final approval.
· Support the Construction Group Manager in updating processes and developing weekly crew schedules.
· As directed, assisting with project management tasks, including drafting requests for information, attending bid tours, assisting with cost proposals and cost estimates, and contacting vendors for pricing.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
· Prolonged periods working with large and noisy equipment.
· Must have excellent depth perception, hearing, and manual dexterity to operate and repair all machines safely.
· Visual acuity to follow hand signals, maintain logs, and inspect and maintain machinery.
· Keyboarding – entering data into a computer using a keyboard.
· Able to work in various positions including walking, stooping, standing, bending over, sitting, kneeling, and squatting for extended periods of time.
· General familiarity with hand tools and how to safely and efficiently use them.
· Ability to organize workspaces and prevent hazards during construction phase.
· Must be able to travel to various project sites within CA up to 5 days at a time and in remote, rugged settings.
· Must be able to hike, drive, traverse and inspect all areas of job sites as well as perform manual labor in all types of weather; this may include walking, climbing, reaching, bending, and possibly crawling in awkward spaces.
· Must be able to lift and carry up to 80 pounds, push and/or pull 60-pound loads at a time.
· Must be on call to address delays, emergencies, severe weather, and other issues at the job site.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- A minimum of 5 years of experience demonstrating increasing responsibility in implementing landscape or ecological restoration construction in varied settings is required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIRED SKILLS:
- Experience operating heavy equipment including excavators, skip loaders, skid steers, tractors, chippers, and other earthmoving or landscaping equipment.
- Knowledge of proper operation, routine maintenance, equipment capabilities, small power tools, chainsaws, gas-powered pumps, mowers, and other equipment using safe work procedures.
- Familiarity with California native plants and plant health considerations.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Experience supervising crews and directing work within assigned areas of responsibility, or willingness to develop supervisory skills.
- Willingness to learn new skills and participate in continuing education related to the position and mentoring others.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with project managers, engineers, landscape architects, biologists, regulators, and field crews.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Commitment to producing ecologically sound work within established budgets and schedules.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, planting plans, grading plans, and project specifications.
- Computer proficiency in MS Office, file servers, PDFs, and other internet applications.
- Knowledge of and commitment to construction site safety protocols, including heavy equipment and trench safety.
- California Class C driver license with a clean driving record.
- Experience driving tool trucks and small dump trucks, forklift operation, and towing trailers.
- Experience operating gasoline- and electric-powered pumps.
- Ability to hike and drive safely in remote and rugged settings.
- Experience installing irrigation systems and erosion control materials in open space or wildland settings.
- Ability to set grades, use a laser level, and interpret grading plans.
- General construction skills, including basic carpentry, chainsaw/tree work, bioengineering, stream restoration, basic plumbing, and related construction practices.
ADDITIONAL DESIRED SKILLS:
· Ability to speak and understand Spanish.
· Experience installing irrigation systems and erosion control materials in open space or wildlands settings.
· Experienced in general or specialized construction practices like basic carpentry, chainsaw/ tree work, bioengineering, stream restoration, basic plumbing, etc.
· Training in construction site safety, especially heavy equipment and trench safety.
· Class A or B California driver license.
· College degree and/or related specialized trainings and certificates.
COMPENSATION:
This is a full time, hourly position with benefits including health, vision, dental and life/AD&D, Safe Harbor 401K Plan, paid holidays and paid time-off (PTO) after meeting eligibility requirements. The pay range is $37-$50 per hour depending upon experience. A company vehicle, cell phone stipend, and laptop will be provided for job duties.
