SCHOOL SAFETY GUARDIAN – Security Guard
JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB GOAL:
To ensure the safety, security and welfare of all students, faculty, staff, and visitors in the assigned school. To assist the administrative staff with applying policies and procedures for safe and orderly schools at the building level. Responsible for maintaining calm and deterring crime on school property or at school-sponsored events.
This position is an armed School Safety Guardian; however, there shall be no law enforcement authority except to the extent necessary to prevent or abate an active assailant incident on school property.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma (or equivalent). Must be 21 years of age or older.
- Military and/or Law Enforcement experience required. Must have experienced “taking fire” or have been shot at in the line of duty.
- Training in other security related field is highly desirable.
- Candidates with military training should have qualified as “expert” in small arms training.
- Law enforcement candidates must show demonstrated proof of high proficiency with small arms.
- Ability to read, write, speak, and understand Standard English.
- Successful completion of initial and ongoing training/certification provided by the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office as required by Chapter 2018-3, Laws of Florida, as a condition of employment.
- Satisfactory completion of American Red Cross Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) course or agreement to earn within one year of employment.
- Must obtain a State of Florida (s 790.06 Florida Statutes) concealed weapons permit and must maintain the permit throughout employment in this position. Must be able to successfully complete ongoing trainings, and firearm proficiency test as outlined in the Marjory Stoneman High School Public Safety Act.
- Must meet all Manatee County Sheriff’s Office requirements to attain a Guardian appointment pursuant to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act. Must obtain and maintain the Guardian appointment throughout employment in this position.
- Must have a valid Florida driver license.
- Must submit to and pass an initial drug test and subsequent random screenings.
- Must successfully pass a comprehensive employment background check.
- Must pass a psychological evaluation.
- Must successfully complete 144 hours of comprehensive firearms safety proficiency training during a Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission certified course conducted by the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office as outlined below:
- 80 hours firearms training
- 16 hours of instruction in precision pistol
- 8 hours of discretionary shooting instruction using approved simulator exercises
- 8 hours of instruction in defensive tactics
- 8 hours of instruction in active shooter or assailant scenarios
- 12 hours of instruction in legal issues
- 12 hours of a certified nationally recognized diversity training program
- Pass Sheriff’s qualification for long guns
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of standard security procedures and best practices. Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills. Basic word processing and spreadsheet skills. Ability to acquire knowledge of School policies and applicable MSA security personnel procedures. Ability to read, write, speak and understand Standard English. Ability to apply standard security procedures and best practices. Ability to work with a wide variety of students from diverse backgrounds. Ability to pass required physical, psychiatric and drug tests. Ability to exercise good judgment under potentially dangerous conditions. Ability to control sudden violent or extreme physical acts of others. Ability to exhibit rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Ability to work well with school administrators, youth, and adults. Ability to prepare and maintain technical records and state/district required reports.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Uses whatever force is necessary to prevent or abate an active assailant incident.
- Immediately responds to and engages to stop the threat of an active assailant.
- Conducts perimeter and inner school checks to ensure premises are secure.
- Analyzes information and situations regarding activities that may be in violation of school policies and or an indication of possible criminal activity for the purpose of determining immediate actions and or making recommendations to ensure safety of students, staff, and the public.
- Collaborates with other school and district personnel, assigned police officers and representatives of local agencies for the purpose of preliminary inquiries into violations of school policies, providing information and/or taking action for the safety and security of school site.
- Communicates school policies and procedures to personnel, parents, and visitors for the purpose of ensuring their understanding of the potential consequences of violation.
- Investigates unusual incidents, e.g. unauthorized visitors, violent threats against students, etc., for the purpose of assisting responding law enforcement personnel, developing information necessary to assist in determining appropriate action, and or providing documentation for future reference.
- Monitors students within a variety of school environments, e.g. rest rooms, grounds, hallways, library, cafeteria, parking lots, etc., for the purpose of ensuring the safety and welfare of students.
- Prepares a variety of documents, e.g. security logs, memos, letters, procedures, etc., for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and or conveying information.
- Reads and responds to email communication.
- Recommends policies, procedures and or actions to school administration for the purpose of providing information and or direction that ensure efficient provision of campus security.
- Refers observation and incidents, e.g. injuries, altercations, suspicious activities, inappropriate social behavior, violations of rules, etc., for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate instructional and or administrative personnel, and or law enforcement for follow-up action.
- Utilizes and monitors surveillance technology.
- Operates metal detectors and conducts appropriate searches when directed to do so.
- Provides support in school and district emergency situations and participates in all school emergency drills, e.g. fire, lockdown, active shooter, hostage, etc.
- Wears a plate carrier with level III+ or level 4 plates, as supplied by the school, when on duty.
- Carries an AR15 style rifle chambered in .223/.556, with specified duty rounds when on duty.
- Carries a minimum of one, 9mm handgun when on duty.
- Ensures that weapons are loaded but not chambered when on duty.
- Uses firearms and ammunition provided by the school unless alternatives are agreed upon in advance.
- Wears the uniforms provided by the school when on duty.
- Qualifies monthly with both weapons with the understanding that, unless notified otherwise, they should shoot approximately 500 rounds of .223/556 and 250 rounds of 9mm supplied by the school. Additional practice rounds are the responsibility of the guardian.
- Inspects their weapons regularly to ensure proper operation. Confers with school to make repairs, replacement, etc.
- Performs other tasks consistent with the goals and objectives of this position.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Requires working indoors and outdoors in various weather-related conditions. Requires sitting, standing and moving about during the day, and the ability to lift, carry, and move and/or position objects infrequently weighting up to 50 pounds.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
The School Safety Guardian is a 12 month at will position with one month of vacation. The work day is eight (8) hours per day. Any overtime must be approved by the Principal in advance except in emergency situations.
Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the School’s policies and procedures. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the School.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
Salary Range:
$46,000 to $50,000 per year based on training and experience as determined by the school.
