Position Overview
The Client is seeking an experienced Project Engineer to plan, coordinate, and execute engineering and capital improvement projects within a manufacturing environment.
This position will be responsible for projects involving new equipment, facility improvements, equipment modifications, process enhancements, and other capital initiatives. The Project Engineer will manage assignments from initial concept and design through installation, commissioning, startup, and final turnover.
The successful candidate should be a self-motivated and adaptable engineering professional who can manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining a strong focus on safety, cost, schedule, quality, and operational performance.
This is a hands-on plant-based engineering position requiring regular interaction with Production, Maintenance, contractors, equipment suppliers, and other engineering resources.
Safety & PPE Requirements
The position requires work within an active industrial/manufacturing facility. Depending on the work area and activity, the selected candidate will be required to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which may include:
- Hard hat
- Safety footwear
- Safety glasses or other eye protection
- Hearing protection
- Additional PPE based on the work area or task being performed
Job Summary
The Project Engineer will support the Client's plant by developing, managing, and delivering engineering projects designed to improve facility capabilities, equipment reliability, productivity, safety, and overall operational performance.
The position will apply engineering principles and practical manufacturing knowledge to evaluate existing operations, investigate technical issues, develop solutions, and support the construction or modification of plant facilities and equipment.
Recommendations should consider project cost, equipment reliability, maintainability, production requirements, material and equipment availability, safety, downtime, and long-term performance.
The Project Engineer will also serve as an important technical resource for Production and Maintenance teams when addressing complex equipment, process, or operational issues.
Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Manage capital engineering projects involving equipment modifications, facility improvements, process upgrades, and new equipment installations from concept through completion.
- Develop project objectives, scope, technical requirements, schedules, budgets, and implementation plans.
- Prepare engineering design scopes, preliminary and detailed cost estimates, and supporting documentation for capital expenditure requests.
- Coordinate engineering activities through the complete project lifecycle, including conceptual design, detailed engineering, procurement support, construction, installation, commissioning, startup, and final turnover.
- Monitor project progress and take appropriate action to maintain agreed-upon scope, schedule, budget, quality, and downtime requirements.
- Evaluate existing equipment, processes, and technologies and recommend practical improvements that enhance safety, reliability, productivity, maintainability, or operating efficiency.
- Provide technical leadership during equipment installation, plant modifications, commissioning activities, and production startup.
- Coordinate the activities of internal Maintenance personnel, contractors, equipment suppliers, consultants, and other technical resources involved in project execution.
- Provide ongoing engineering support to Production and Maintenance teams for equipment, process, and facility-related issues.
- Lead or participate in troubleshooting efforts for complex operational and equipment problems and help identify sustainable corrective solutions.
- Apply structured problem-solving and root-cause analysis techniques to investigate equipment failures and recurring process issues.
- Establish, maintain, and improve engineering standards related to equipment design, project execution, installation practices, safety, reliability, and cost control.
- Review engineering drawings, equipment specifications, technical documentation, vendor information, and construction requirements.
- Work with multidisciplinary teams involving mechanical, electrical, process, maintenance, operations, and other engineering functions.
- Provide engineering support for the introduction and implementation of new products, equipment, processes, and systems.
- Communicate technical information and engineering recommendations in a manner that can be effectively understood and applied by Operations and Maintenance personnel.
- Promote safe engineering and maintenance practices and ensure that safety requirements are considered throughout project planning and execution.
- Support compliance with applicable OSHA, general industry, environmental, and plant safety requirements.
- Identify potential project and operational risks and recommend appropriate mitigation measures.
- Support training, documentation, and operational turnover associated with newly installed or modified equipment.
- Maintain ownership of assigned engineering improvements following implementation to help ensure solutions continue to perform as intended.
- Perform additional plant engineering and project-related responsibilities as required.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, preferably Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, or another relevant engineering discipline.
- Minimum 5 years of relevant engineering experience, preferably within a manufacturing, continuous-process, building products, roofing products, or similar industrial environment.
- Demonstrated experience managing capital projects from planning and design through installation, commissioning, startup, and turnover.
- Ability to manage multidisciplinary engineering projects involving several departments, contractors, vendors, and technical resources.
- Experience controlling projects within established budget, scope, schedule, production downtime, and operational constraints.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing equipment, processes, maintenance practices, and plant operations.
- Ability to provide technical leadership and function as a lead engineering resource when required.
- Strong computer skills and working knowledge of productivity and collaboration software, including Google Workspace/G Suite.
- Working knowledge of OSHA requirements, general industrial safety practices, and environmental compliance requirements.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and project-management skills.
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple engineering assignments simultaneously while maintaining close attention to detail.
- Demonstrated hands-on technical problem-solving experience involving contractors, Maintenance personnel, Production teams, and/or equipment suppliers.
Technical Skills & Experience
The successful candidate should demonstrate experience or knowledge in the following areas:
- Capital project planning, development, budgeting, and execution.
- Conceptual and detailed engineering design.
- Equipment installation and construction coordination.
- Equipment commissioning, startup, training, and operational turnover.
- Continuous manufacturing processes and production equipment.
- Interpretation of engineering drawings, specifications, equipment documentation, and technical requirements.
- Structured troubleshooting and root-cause analysis methodologies.
- Ability to convert engineering and technical information into practical instructions or recommendations for Production and Maintenance teams.
- Understanding of multidisciplinary engineering fundamentals, including interaction between mechanical, electrical, process, and operational systems.
- Familiarity with Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) and Process Safety Management (PSM) concepts and methodologies.
- Experience working with manufacturing equipment suppliers, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), engineering consultants, or integrated engineering/design environments is considered an asset.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous engineering experience within a continuous manufacturing or industrial production environment.
- Experience working with OEMs, engineering consulting organizations, or integrated design teams.
- Design and drafting experience using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software.
- Experience with Autodesk products is preferred.
- Familiarity with structured problem-solving methodologies such as Kepner-Tregoe or comparable root-cause analysis approaches.
Physical Requirements
This position involves regular work throughout an industrial manufacturing facility. The employee should be capable of performing activities that may include:
- Frequently standing, walking, and moving throughout the facility.
- Periodically working from a seated position.
- Occasionally lifting or moving materials or equipment weighing up to approximately 50 lbs.
- Frequently carrying materials or equipment as required.
- Performing pushing and pulling activities.
- Frequently climbing or ascending/descending stairs, ladders, or similar access points.
- Occasionally maintaining balance while working in plant environments.
- Regularly bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or working in restricted positions when inspecting equipment or project installations.
- Reaching and handling tools, equipment, drawings, or materials on a regular basis.
- Frequently grasping and performing repetitive movements.
- Communicating effectively in an industrial environment where hearing protection may be required.
- Maintaining sufficient physical coordination to safely navigate manufacturing and project work areas.
Working Environment
The Project Engineer will work in both office and active manufacturing environments. Plant conditions may regularly include:
- High or low temperatures
- Humidity
- Wet or damp areas
- Elevated noise levels
- Industrial equipment and operational hazards
- Changes in temperature between work areas
- Equipment-related vibration
The selected candidate must be comfortable working safely in these conditions and following all Client safety procedures and PPE requirements.
Pay: $50.00 - $60.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40.0 per week
