Community Engagement & Communications Specialist

This position supports projects during the planning, design, and construction phases of various transportation, water, land use, and energy projects.

Role Responsibilities:

Support implementation of outreach/communications plans and activities:

Draft and edit a range of client-ready collateral material(s).
Create client-ready project updates and reports for internal and external audiences.
Create content for the project website, including updates and content and social media updates.
Track community correspondence and interactions and draft response messages.
Coordinate logistics for in-person community events and meetings, including planning, coordination, and staffing.
Coordinate logistics for online public meetings, including managing the meeting platform.
Provide in-person, onsite, door-to-door outreach to community members, neighbors, businesses, etc.
Coordinate and staff onsite community events, including tabling, booths, pop-ups, and other culturally responsive events.
Provide construction hotline support, including being ‘on-call’ and/or answering calls from the public from a designated hotline account. Calls may occur outside of typical working hours, including evenings and weekends.
Track and report public comments, interactions, questions, and responses in a project database.

Help manage and grow client relationships:

Partner with clients to understand and implement public engagement objectives.
Work with a project team to plan, develop, and implement community engagement activities.
Support online and in-person engagement activities, client meetings, presentations, and stakeholder discussions.

Required Qualifications:

An associate’s degree is required, a bachelor’s degree is preferred.
A minimum of 1 year related experience
Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
Highly organized, detail-oriented, strong communicator
Preference is given to local candidates

Preferred Qualifications:

Background and/or academic coursework in Urban and Regional Planning, Journalism, Communications, English, Political Science, Environmental Studies, or related fields.
Ability to understand and communicate complex information and concepts to non-technical audiences.
Excellent writing and editing skills.
Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
Strong relationship-building and listening skills.
A commitment to and experience in implementing equitable engagement to reach marginalized communities.
Comfort working in a fast-paced environment on multiple projects simultaneously.
Experience implementing communications and/or public engagement on infrastructure project(s) in the transportation, water, parks, energy, environmental, and/or land use sectors.

Hybrid Workplace Expectations:

S&A operates as a hybrid workplace where staff managers support new employees in maximizing their learning opportunities through onsite collaboration and connections with colleagues and project staff. We require staff to come into the office twice a week to establish a foundational understanding of their roles and learn from others about our work and our approach to planning, designing, and implementing public engagement in thoughtful and equitable ways. Alternative arrangements will be made for employees living more than 30 miles from the office.

Physical Requirements:

This position primarily involves working in an office environment, with extended periods spent at a desk and on a computer. It also includes some onsite visits and requires lifting.

Salary range: $28-$38/hr ($58,240-$79,040)
