Position Summary
The Horizontal Directional Driller is responsible for operating HDD equipment to install underground conduit and fiber optic infrastructure while maintaining production goals and ensuring the safety of the crew, public, and existing utilities.
Responsibilities
- Safely operate Vermeer and/or Ditch Witch directional drilling equipment.
- Complete pilot bores, reaming, and pullback operations.
- Read and interpret construction plans, utility locates, and bore profiles.
- Work closely with the HDD Locator to maintain proper depth, alignment, and clearance from existing utilities.
- Perform pre-trip and daily equipment inspections.
- Troubleshoot drilling issues and changing soil conditions.
- Assist with potholing, utility verification, and excavation when necessary.
- Ensure all work complies with OSHA, customer, and company safety standards.
- Maintain accurate daily production reports and equipment logs.
- Work efficiently to meet production schedules while maintaining quality workmanship.
- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on drilling equipment.
Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of HDD drilling experience.
- Experience installing telecommunications or fiber optic conduit.
- Experience operating Vermeer or Ditch Witch drill rigs.
- Ability to read utility maps and construction prints.
- Strong understanding of underground utility locating and damage prevention.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Ability to lift 75 pounds.
- Valid driver's license required.
- CDL Class A preferred.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
Preferred Certifications
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
- CDL Class A
- Traffic Control certification (preferred)
- First Aid/CPR (preferred)
