Full Job Description

Job Overview:

The Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) Certified Professional Coder is responsible for accurate and timely review, assignment, and validation of diagnosis and procedure codes for professional outpatient services in accordance with ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, payer-specific, and regulatory guidelines. This position supports optimal reimbursement through accurate charge capture, coding compliance, documentation review, and collaboration with providers, clinical staff, and revenue cycle partners. The RCM Coder ensures coding integrity while maintaining productivity and quality standards that support organizational financial performance and regulatory compliance.

RESPONSIBILITES-

CODING AND CHARGE CAPTURE:

Review provider documentation and assign accurate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes for professional outpatient encounters.
Process all assigned charges within established productivity standards (generally within 48 hours of receipt).
Validate charge accuracy prior to claim submission to ensure complete and compliant billing.
Review and resolve coding edits, claim rejections, and missing documentation affecting reimbursement.
Apply official coding guidelines, payer-specific requirements, National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) edits, and Local/National Coverage Determinations (LCD/NCD).
Ensure documentation supports medical necessity and services billed.
Identify documentation deficiencies and communicate opportunities for improvement to providers and leadership.

REVENUE CYCLE SUPPORT:

Collaborate with Denials Management and Clinical Operations to resolve coding-related issues.
Correct coding-related account errors to facilitate clean claim submission.
Support timely claim submission by minimizing coding delays.
Assist with coding-related appeals and payer documentation requests as needed.
Review insurance requirements impacting coding and reimbursement.

COMPLIANCE AND QUALITY:

Maintain compliance with CMS, federal, state, and payer regulations.
Track recurring documentation or coding trends and communicate findings to leadership.
Maintain confidentiality of protected health information (PHI) in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
Stay current with annual coding updates, reimbursement methodologies, and regulatory changes.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE:

ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma or GED required.
Certified Professional Coder (CPC) credential required. 5+ years of direct coding experience will be considered in conjunction with successfully passing CPC exam within 6 months of start date.
Additional coding credentials (CPC-I, CCS-P, RHIT, RHIA, CRC) preferred.
Minimum of two (2) years of professional outpatient coding experience required.
Dermatology and Plastic Surgery physician coding experience preferred.
Experience with electronic health records and practice management systems required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position primarily works in an office or remote office environment with standard office equipment and moderate noise levels. Reliable internet connectivity and the ability to maintain HIPAA-compliant work practices are required for remote work arrangements, where applicable.
