JOB SUMMARY
Under the general supervision of the department manager, supervises activities and assists department staff with the operations of Welch Cancer Center, Palliative Care, Rheumatology and Outpatient Infusion service lines. Promotes effective utilization of services, streamlines workflows to best serve patients, monitors resources to ensure the most efficient practices and assumes leadership with the multidisciplinary team to achieve optimal service line performance. Writes and educates staff on standard of work. Plans and organizes activities and department operations to ensure patient needs are met in accordance with physician instruction and hospital policy. Act as a physician liaison. Supports and empowers staff to embrace SMH mission and goals. Provides direct patient care as needed. Consults other departments, as appropriate, to collaborate in patient care and provide for an interdisciplinary approach.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Supervisor duties and responsibilities include:
- Along with the department manager, provides feedback for orientation and annual performance appraisals and clinical competency assessment, ensuring regular feedback, coaching, and communications with employees.
- Ensures a high level of performance standards and achievement to meet organizational needs and business goals.
- Provides development opportunities for staff to broaden and enhance skills and abilities.
- Administers organization policies and procedures.
- Ensures compliance with safety policies and good housekeeping.
- Coordinates initial training of new employees and ongoing training as required.
- Promotes an environment that fosters teamwork and commitment to satisfy customer requirements.
- Develops ongoing competency assessment and opportunities to engage employees with ongoing education opportunities.
- Actively participates in and owns process improvement projects for the unit, utilizing Management Daily Improvement techniques, LEAN techniques and ownership in the process with the manager, participates in aspects of the employment cycle.
General Duties
- Responsible for the staff scheduling, staff development and ongoing education across specialty services.
- Formulates a teaching plan based upon the identified learning needs of staff and evaluates the effectiveness of their learning.
- Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
- Provides general direction to department staff for daily operations, staffing, clinical activities, huddles, safety, and quality matters.
- Assists in the development of performance improvement/LEAN activities. Educates staff on the PI process. Participates in PI data collection, indicator development, and evaluation criteria, etc. Maintains appropriate quality control programs.
- Participates in the development, implementation, review, and revision of departmental policies and procedures.
- Ensures all rules and regulations are observed by employees, to include overall corporate compliance and compliance with regulatory standards.
- Participates in safety reporting, root cause analysis of safety events and logging into RL Solutions.
- Implements and monitors adherence to evidence-based clinical nursing practice consistent with nursing research, organizational, and national practice standards.
- Identifies gaps and collaborates with manager to initiate strategies to improve patient care, patient satisfaction, and employee satisfaction.
- Identifies needs and sets goals for own growth and development; meets all mandatory organizational and departmental requirements.
- Supports orientation and in-service training activities for nursing, ensuring compliance with annual educational, safety, and regulatory requirements consistent with hospital policy and procedures.
- Will provide direct and indirect patient care in the department setting when patient census and staffing require.
- Plans coverage for sick calls and staffing units in coordination with the manager.

- Adheres to professional guidelines for practice such as defined by the Wyoming State Board of Nursing, the American Nurses Association, ANA and any department-specific organization.

- Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassessments as per policy and specific to unit age specific populations.
- Ability to formulate and revise an individualized plan of care as indicated by the patient’s response to treatment. Evaluates the overall daily plan for effectiveness.
- Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques, including nonpharmacological techniques. Includes the patient and family in all aspects of pain management through ongoing education about pain, assessment, treatment and common barriers to adequate management.
- Documentation meets current standards and policies.
- Demonstrates ability to perform treatments and provide services within the scope of practice.
- Communicates appropriately and clearly with all health care team members.
- Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.
- Provides care appropriate to the disease condition and age of the patient.
- Demonstrates an ability to assist physicians with procedures and performs services requiring technical and manual skills.
- Reports significant events such as near misses, adverse events, patient/family complaints, and any situation that affects the safe delivery of patient-centered care in a timely manner.
- Ensures that all infection control precautions and procedures are followed in the department.
Service
- Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families.
- Functions as liaison between the patient/family, physicians, other healthcare providers and administration.
- Interacts professionally with the patient/family and involves the patient/family in the formation of the plan of care.
- Identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of patients and family; communicates with the social service/discharge planner regarding both in-hospital and post-discharge needs.
- Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function well under stressful situations.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS — Education, Experience & License
- Current unrestricted Wyoming Registered Nurse Licensure, required.
- Nursing degree, required
- Minimum 5 years of nursing experience required.
- Minimum 2 years of supervisory experience, preferred.
- BLS, required.
- Must obtain ONS/ONCC Provider Card within 3 months of hire date.
- OCN Certified, or must obtain OCN Certification within the outlined parameters of the ONCC.
