The English, Writing, and Communication department is looking for adjunct instructors to teach two courses for the Fall 2026 semester. Please indicate in a cover letter for which course(s) you are interested in teaching.

ENGL 2701: Literature and Film

This course explores the relationship between visual and written media by studying adaptation both as a creative process and as a connecting theme in twentieth and twenty-first century American literature and film. On the level of content, students will ask overarching questions such as: How do artists adapt to a world that sometimes reveres and at times rejects both originality and the figure of the artist, especially when their art confronts social injustices related to race, gender, and class? How do artists work within established traditions to imagine systemic change? What happens when they do? Students also learn discipline-specific methods of analyzing both literature and film. At the same time, they consider a set of foundational questions springing from the long tradition of creative adaptation: In adapting a literary work for the screen, what happens to elements such as character, theme, and narrative? Must formal elements such as plot and setting remain the same to attain the same meaning? Must the same meaning be attained? Can it be? Can certain elements of a work be translated across media? Or are the forms-and therefore their contents or meanings-fundamentally different? How does each medium represent reality? What power does each hold over our imaginations, individually and culturally?

Instructors will have discretion to adjust focus area(s) based on their area of expertise.

This Face-to-face synchronous course meets T/TH 6-7:15 PM

ENGL 2321: Love & Gender in British Literature and Film

This course focuses on representations of gender as they relate to love relationships in British literary texts and a variety of films. The course provides an introduction to gender theory as it applies to literary and media studies, with a heavy emphasis on pre-1700 British literature. Readings may include the sonnet sequences of Lady Mary Wroth and Sir Philip Sidney, Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, Virginia Wolf's Orlando, Jeanette Winterson's The Powerbook, and Jenni Fagan's The Sunlight Pilgrims. Films may include Il Postino (Radford 1994), Soldier's Girl (Pierson 2003), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Gondry 2004), Bridget Jones's Diary (Maguire 2001), Her (Jonze 2013), Orlando (Potter 2011), and Juliet Naked (Peretz 2018)

Instructors will have discretion to adjust focus area(s) based on their area of expertise.

This Face-to-face synchronous course meets T/TH 4:30-5:45 PM

Job Requirements:

Master's degree in a related subject
Candidates should demonstrate a record or promise of successful teaching at the college level, especially in the context of a diverse student community.
Candidates should demonstrate knowledge of and experience teaching or advanced study relevant to the course topic.
