Purpose/Mission/Vision

Gateway Mission is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit ecclesiastical ministry operating under the
direction of a volunteer Board of Directors elected from a broad cross-section of Christians in
the community.

Position Summary

The Assistant Food Service Director is responsible for the day-to-day operation of Gateway
Mission's Food Services Department. Working under the direction of the Food Service
Director, this position leads daily kitchen operations while actively participating in food
preparation, supervising employees, volunteers, and guests assigned to kitchen workstations,
and ensuring meals are prepared safely, efficiently, and on schedule.

Operating from the primary commercial kitchen at the Men's Center Eastport, the Assistant
Food Service Director coordinates the preparation, packaging, and delivery of meals for the
Men's Center Eastport, the Women & Children's Center, and other Gateway Mission functions
while maintaining high standards of food quality, sanitation, stewardship, and teamwork.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Daily Food Service Operations

Direct daily kitchen operations to ensure meals are prepared, packaged, delivered,

and served safely and on schedule.

Coordinate food production for approximately three meals each day, seven days per

week.

Actively participate in food preparation, cooking, serving, and cleanup.
Coordinate preparation and delivery of meals to the Women & Children's Center.
Monitor meal quality, portion control, presentation, and timeliness.
Support food service for Board meetings, donor events, volunteer appreciation events,

holiday meals, and other Gateway Mission functions.

Staff Leadership

Provide day-to-day supervision and coaching for Kitchen Supervisors, Kitchen

Assistants, and Food Service Utility Assistants.

Develop employee work schedules and coordinate staffing coverage under the

direction of the Food Service Director.

Coordinate onboarding and day-to-day training for department employees.
Reinforce department expectations, policies, and standard operating procedures.
Promote teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement within the

department.

Volunteer & Guest Engagement

Provide daily direction, training, and supervision for volunteers serving during

assigned shifts.

Coordinate daily work assignments for guests assigned to kitchen workstations.
Ensure volunteers and guests understand food safety, sanitation, and workplace

expectations.

Foster a respectful, organized, and welcoming work environment that supports

Gateway Mission's mission and values.

Food Safety & Regulatory Compliance

Maintain commercial kitchen sanitation practices that meet or exceed local health

department licensing requirements and ServSafe® standards.

Monitor food preparation, storage, labeling, temperature logs, and product rotation

using FIFO (First In, First Out) inventory practices.

Ensure kitchen, storage, coolers, freezers, and dining areas remain clean, organized,

and inspection ready.

Identify and report equipment maintenance or safety concerns promptly.
Assist with health inspections and implementation of corrective actions as needed

Administration & Operational Support

Maintain appropriate inventory levels of food, supplies, and cleaning products.
Coordinate receiving/distributing, storage, rotation, and organization of donated and

purchased food.

Prepare purchasing recommendations and inventory needs for the Food Service

Director.

Maintain department records related to inventory, food safety, and daily operations.
Recommend operational improvements that increase efficiency, stewardship, and

service quality.

Serve as acting department leader in the absence of the Food Service Director.

Personal Qualifications

Practicing believer in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Active member of a local evangelical church community.
Desire to meet the physical and spiritual needs of others by sharing the Gospel.
Demonstrates integrity, humility, accountability, and servant leadership.

Education/Experience

Required

High school diploma or equivalent and culinary, hospitality, or food service

management education.

Minimum three years of progressively responsible commercial food service

experience.

Previous supervisory or lead experience.
Current ServSafe® Manager Certification.
Valid Michigan driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Preferred

Experience leading volunteers.
Experience in nonprofit, institutional, healthcare, school, rescue mission, or other

high-volume food service environments.

Experience with inventory management and purchasing.
Experience/knowledge of homelessness culture and the ministry of rescue missions.

Skills and Abilities

Strong leadership, organizational, and time-management skills.
Ability to coordinate multiple priorities in a fast-paced commercial kitchen.

Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to coach employees and volunteers while maintaining accountability.
Working knowledge of commercial kitchen operations, food safety regulations, and

ServSafe® standards.

Intermediate computer skills, including Microsoft 365.
Ability to identify problems, make sound decisions, and maintain a positive, solutions-

oriented approach.

Physical Activities/Demands & Work Environment

Stand, walk, bend, reach, lift, and carry regularly throughout the workday.
Lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
Safely operate commercial kitchen equipment.
Regular exposure to heat, cold, steam, moisture, cleaning chemicals, and commercial

kitchen equipment.

Moderate exposure to environmental hazards, including sharp objects, hot surfaces,

and potential exposure to bloodborne or airborne pathogens.

Work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays as

department operations require.
