Job Overview

Assistant Director / Lead Teacher

Reports to: Center Director

Position Summary

The Assistant Director / Lead Teacher is a dual role designed to provide both instructional leadership in the classroom and administrative support for the center. This individual is responsible for guiding children’s daily learning experiences while also assisting the Center Director with operations, family engagement, and staff mentorship. The Assistant Director helps ensure that Tip Tap Grow’s philosophy of respect, cooperation, and love of learning is consistently upheld throughout the school community. This position will also promote to Director role once trained on TTG program.

Key Responsibilities

Classroom Teaching & Curriculum

Establish and lead morning and extended day work periods; provide lessons as needed.
Maintain a classroom environment true to the Tip Tap Grow philosophy, responsive to student needs.
Plan, prepare, and update curriculum materials, thematic units, and library selections.
Coordinate guest presenters and field trips.
Observe and document student progress; complete individual learning plans and conference reports.

Family & Community Communication

Communicate regularly with families through email newsletters and daily check-ins.
Schedule and lead two family communications per year, including at least one in-person conference.
Participate in family events, programs, and performances.
Meet with prospective families and support the enrollment process.
Report suspected child abuse or neglect according to state law.

Leadership & Mentorship

Assist the Center Director with oversight of daily operations.
Step into Director duties as needed in their absence.
Mentor classroom teachers, aides and volunteers, providing hands-on training and feedback.
Model professionalism, Tip Tap Grow philosophy, and continuous improvement.
Conduct classroom team meetings and participate in staff evaluations.

Administration & Record Keeping

Maintain records in Brightwheel for attendance, observations, and communication.
Keep a center calendar of events.
Support compliance with state licensing requirements and Tip Tap Grow policies.
Collaborate with the Director on outreach and community engagement.

Qualifications

Associate’s degree or higher in Early Childhood Education (or related field).
Oregon Registry Step 9 or higher (Step 6+ may be considered if in progress).
Minimum of three years’ classroom experience; leadership or mentoring experience preferred.
Strong understanding of child development, with high energy and strong communication skills.
Ability to plan, lead, and participate in classroom activities while modeling positive guidance.
Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs and engage in active classroom movement.
Strong understanding of Montessori method and play based learning.

Orientation, Recognizing & Reporting Child Abuse & Neglect, Safe Sleep, and Health & Safety trainings
Current First Aid & CPR (infants, children, adults)
Current Food Handler’s Card
Foundations for Learning
ABAR Training & Trauma-Informed Care Training
Program Management Training (10 hours, required for assistant directors)
15 annual hours of professional development (including 8 hrs in child development, 1 hr in health/safety/nutrition)
