Job Overview
We are seeking a passionate and dynamic Activity/Recreational Therapist to join our dedicated healthcare team. In this vital role, you will design, implement, and evaluate engaging therapeutic recreation programs tailored to meet the diverse needs of our patients at Center for Behavioral Health Maryland Heights, a 20-bed psychiatric hospital. Duties
- Develop and execute individualized and group therapeutic recreation programs
- Conduct comprehensive patient assessments to identify interests, abilities, limitations, and therapeutic goals in collaboration with healthcare teams.
- Facilitate engaging group therapy sessions focused on behavioral health management, de-escalation techniques, crisis management, and social skills development for diverse populations including geriatrics, adults, individuals with mental health illnesses.
- Maintain detailed medical documentation and records in compliance with HIPAA regulations; accurately record progress notes and activity outcomes in electronic medical records systems.
- Coordinate intake procedures for new clients and assist with case management to ensure seamless integration into therapeutic programs.
- Utilize data collection methods to monitor program effectiveness and adapt activities to meet evolving patient needs.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams—including nurses, social workers, psychologists—to optimize patient care plans centered on mental health and behavioral health recovery goals.
Skills
- Extensive experience working with individuals with disabilities across age groups—including seniors in assisted living or hospice care—and those with mental health conditions such as PTSD or dementia.
- Proficiency in medical terminology and understanding of psychiatric patient care protocols; familiarity with medical documentation standards such as HIPAA.
- Strong background in program development for therapeutic recreation with creative approaches for mental illnesses.
- Ability to perform patient assessments accurately and develop tailored activity plans that foster engagement and progress.
- Skilled in crisis management techniques including de-escalation strategies; adept at managing challenging behaviors compassionately.
- Experience working within behavioral health hospitals or psychiatric settings; knowledge of diagnostic evaluation processes is highly desirable.
- Excellent communication skills for client interaction—whether conducting individual or group counseling—and collaborating effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Knowledge of medical records management systems and experience documenting therapeutic interventions thoroughly and accurately.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree in Recreational Therapy, Exercise Science, or related field
- Valid driver’s license
- 1+ year of recreation therapy experience in a psychiatric setting
- Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist -preferred but not required
