GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, this position performs complex (journey-level) building maintenance and construction work to include preventative maintenance, inspecting and cleaning of facilities and grounds. Responsible for daily operation and maintenance of park facilities, grounds, equipment and visitor services. Duties include but are not limited to mowing, trimming, garbage collection, cleaning restrooms, care of livestock, carpentry, plumbing, mechanical repairs and vehicle maintenance. Operates and maintains various types of equipment including hand tools, power tools, mowers, tractors and trucks. Oversees the park herd(s) and maintains the livestock and wildlife management programs, including required daily, weekly and monthly records and reports on animals. Provides quality visitor services Inspects facilities, assists in enforcing park rules and regulations, performs resource management tasks and interprets the parks natural and cultural resources. May train, lead, assign, and/or prioritize the work of others. Researches and conducts educational and interpretive park programs. Other duties include assisting with park programs and special events; volunteer program; park safety program and acts as park Site Safety Officer (SSO). Subject to respond to emergency call outs. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Graduation from High School or GED.
Experience:
Three years of facility, equipment or grounds maintenance experience.
Licensure:
Must possess a valid State driver's license.
ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS:
Experience:
Thirty semester hours from an accredited college or university may substitute for one year of the required experience, with a maximum substitution of two years.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Parks and Recreation, Wildlife, Agriculture or Biology.
Experience:
Experience working with the public.
Customer service and public relations experience.
Experience supervising seasonal staff and volunteers.
Experienced working with livestock and wildlife.
Licensure:
Non-commercial Pesticide Applicator License issued by the Texas Department of Agriculture.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of building and facility repair techniques such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical or mechanical.
Knowledge of resource management principles.
Knowledge of basic mathematics.
Skill in the use of hand and power tools, mowers, trimmers, chain saws, tractors, vehicles, generators and other mechanical equipment.
Skill in livestock management.
Skill in wildlife management.
Skill in agriculture business and management operations.
Skill in effective verbal and written communication.
Skill in operating a personal computer.
Skill in using MS Word, Excel and Outlook.
Skill in basic monthly report writing.
Skill in planning and/or assigning the work of others.
Skill in making independent, sound and timely decisions.
Ability to work effectively with the public and co-workers.
Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.
Ability to manage various classes of livestock, hay production fields, grazing areas, wildlife areas and oversee their needs.
Ability to operate and drive equipment - trucks, tractors, trailers, mowers.
Ability to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.
Ability to apply pesticides and herbicides in a safe manner and in accordance with state regulations.
Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Required to work in a public park.
Required to work 40 hours per week, includes various schedules with hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.
Required to work long schedules during peak visitation demand.
Required to travel 5%.
Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules and safety procedures.
Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
