Job Summary:
The Buyer I is responsible for supporting purchasing and material planning activities for manufacturing operations within a structural steel and pre-engineered metal building (PEMB) environment. This role assists with sourcing raw materials, fabricated components, production supplies, shop consumables, and operational services necessary to support daily manufacturing operations and production schedules.
The Buyer I works closely with production, inventory control, engineering, shipping, warehouse, and suppliers to ensure materials are purchased accurately, delivered on time, and maintained at appropriate inventory levels. This role plays a key part in supporting operational continuity, inventory accuracy, supplier communication, and cost-effective purchasing practices within a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities:
ERP System Management
- Utilize Strumis ERP software to create, manage, and track purchase orders, material requirements, inventory transactions, and procurement activities.
- Maintain accurate item master data, vendor information, material codes, and purchasing records within the Strumis system.
- Assist with resolving purchasing discrepancies, receiving issues, and inventory variances within the ERP system.
Purchasing Operations
- Create, process, and maintain purchase orders for raw materials, fabricated components, production supplies, shop consumables, equipment, and operational services.
- Monitor open purchase orders and follow up with suppliers to ensure timely delivery of materials and services.
- Coordinate with vendors regarding pricing, lead times, shipment schedules, order confirmations, shortages, and delivery discrepancies.
- Assist with sourcing materials and evaluating alternative suppliers to support operational demands and cost control initiatives.
- Review material requisitions and verify purchasing information for accuracy, completeness, and proper approvals.
- Support purchasing activities related to steel, hardware, paint, consumables, fabrication supplies, safety products, and production-related materials.
Production & Manufacturing Support
- Work closely with production scheduling, warehouse, and manufacturing teams to support material availability and operational priorities.
- Assist with managing inventory levels to minimize shortages, excess inventory, and production interruptions.
- Monitor critical inventory items and communicate potential supply concerns to leadership.
- Support coordination of rush orders, production priorities, and expedited shipments as needed.
- Assist with resolving material-related issues impacting production schedules or operational efficiency.
- Support manufacturing operations by helping ensure purchased materials meet quality and specification requirements.
Inventory, Reporting & Administrative Support
- Maintain accurate purchasing records, procurement files, vendor information, and system documentation.
- Enter and maintain purchasing data within ERP, inventory, or purchasing systems.
- Assist with inventory audits, cycle counts, and inventory reconciliation activities as needed.
- Prepare reports related to purchasing activity, inventory levels, open orders, and supplier performance.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to purchasing processes, inventory management, and operational efficiency.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Experience: 3 years of purchasing, procurement, inventory control, or manufacturing support experience preferred.
- Experience in manufacturing, fabrication, structural steel, or industrial environments
- Experience using Strumis ERP software within a structural steel fabrication or manufacturing environment strongly preferred.
- Experience working with ERP, MRP, or inventory management systems.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Education: Associate degree in Business, Supply Chain, Purchasing, Operations Management, or related field. Bachelor’s degree preferred
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Understanding of purchasing, procurement, inventory management, and supply chain operations.
- Knowledge of manufacturing materials, shop supplies, and production support processes preferred.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and time management skills.
- Ability to prioritize multiple purchasing activities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in purchasing documentation and data entry.
- Effective communication and vendor relationship management skills.
- Ability to analyze purchasing issues and assist with problem resolution.
- Ability to work collaboratively with production, warehouse, engineering, and operational teams.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and professionalism.
Work Environment
- Office environment within a manufacturing and production setting.

- Occasional exposure to manufacturing floor conditions including noise, dust, moving equipment, and varying temperatures.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, and move throughout office and manufacturing environments as needed.
- Ability to occasionally lift or carry office materials, samples, or supplies up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to work at a computer workstation for extended periods.
