Full Job Description

Job Summary:

The DOT Specimen Collector is responsible for collecting, handling, and documenting biological specimens (primarily urine, and occasionally saliva or breath samples) in compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. This role ensures the integrity of the collection process while maintaining strict adherence to federal guidelines, accuracy in documentation, and professionalism when interacting with donors.

Key Responsibilities:

Perform specimen collections in accordance with DOT and federal drug and alcohol testing regulations.
Verify donor identity and explain the collection process clearly and professionally.
Maintain chain-of-custody procedures to ensure specimen integrity.
Accurately complete all required documentation, including custody and control forms (CCFs).
Ensure proper labeling, sealing, and packaging of specimens for transport to certified laboratories.
Monitor collection sites to prevent tampering or adulteration of specimens.
Maintain cleanliness, organization, and compliance standards within the collection facility.
Handle sensitive and confidential information in accordance with privacy regulations.
Address donor concerns and provide clear instructions during the collection process.
Stay updated on DOT regulations and participate in required training and certification programs.

Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent required.
DOT Specimen Collector certification (preferred or required depending on employer).
Knowledge of DOT drug and alcohol testing procedures and regulations.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy in documentation.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to handle sensitive situations with professionalism and discretion.
Basic computer skills for data entry and record management.

Work Environment:

Collection sites, clinics, mobile testing units, or employer facilities.
May involve standing for extended periods and occasional travel to off-site locations.
Must be able to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, or weekends as needed.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to stand, walk, and perform repetitive tasks.
Manual dexterity for handling specimens and documentation.
Ability to lift and transport specimen kits and supplies (typically up to 20 lbs).

Compliance & Certification:

Must adhere to all DOT 49 CFR Part 40 regulations.
Completion of initial and ongoing proficiency training required.
Participation in error-correction training if necessary.

Preferred Skills:

Experience in healthcare, laboratory, or occupational health settings.
Familiarity with electronic collection systems (eCCF).
Bilingual abilities are a plus.
