Full Job Description

The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas is one of the largest district courts among the country's 94 federal judicial districts. The district courts, combined with the appellate courts and the Supreme Court, make up the Judicial branch of the federal government. The Southern District of Texas consists of the following seven divisional offices: Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Galveston, Houston, Laredo, McAllen, and Victoria.

We are seeking qualified applicants for the position of Case Manager to U.S. Magistrate Judge Dena Hanovice Palermo in the Houston division. The case manager will be housed in chambers and represents the Clerk of Court in matters regarding courtroom proceedings, has responsibility for the judge's calendar, maintains record of cases assigned to the judge, regulates movement of cases by setting or resetting dates and times for hearings and trials, and performs other duties as assigned.

The ability to interact with the bar and the public in a professional and effective manner is crucial.

Target Grade: CL 27. The selected applicant will be placed at the highest grade and step for which the applicant qualifies.

Representative Duties

Monitors the status of cases and maintains control records of the cases assigned to the judge.
Examines all papers filed in an action assigned to the judge to determine that they conform with the rules of practice.
Calendars and regulates the movement of cases by fixing (or by resetting when necessary) dates and times for hearings on various types of motions, pre-trial hearings, bond hearings, pre-settlement conferences and trials, notifying counsel and other parties concerned, and monitoring the civil cases assigned until conclusion.
Prepares or supervises the preparation of calendars. Confers with attorneys, acting as liaison between the judge and counsel.
Acts as a source of information to attorneys on the special procedures of the judge or court, answers procedural questions, and assists with compliance.
Promotes the efficient use of the court's time by actively encouraging the counsel involved to bring their case to maturity for trial or final disposition.
Prepares special reports for the judge and clerk's office on the status of cases assigned.
Maintains frequent contact with attorneys regarding the status of cases in order to have a basis for such reports.
Processes the appointment of attorneys when such services are authorized for defendants in criminal cases.
Calls the court calendar.
Conducts arraignments of defendants in criminal cases.
Notes the appearance of counsel in matters before the court.
Impanels the jury and administers oaths to jurors.
Communicates with the jury clerk for the ordering and cancellation of juries.
Keeps required records on other jury matters.
Swears witnesses and interpreters.
Advises the financial section of the Clerk's Office of matters affecting that section, such as the imposition of fines and orders of restitution by the judge in criminal cases or central violations bureau fines.
Enters judgments and other actions of court in dockets, order books, and other court records. Prepares statistical records of matters coming before the judge.
Performs other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications

Experience in the Judicial Support Specialist program preferred.
Previous case manager/relief case manager experience is strongly preferred.
An Associate's or Bachelor's degree is preferred, but not required.
Ability to take notes and summarize material for minute entries/judgments in a distracting setting.
Must be able to deal effectively with judicial officers and staff as well as all staff within the clerk's office in scheduling events and managing courtroom logistics.
Knowledge of and skill in the use of applicable automated systems.
Must be able to work extended hours as required by the Court.
