Join a Company Built on Craftsmanship Since 1898
Crescent Manufacturing is a union facility and one of the only companies in the U.S. dedicated exclusively to the design and production of high-precision specialty cutting blades.
With an average employee tenure of 20 years, we offer a workplace built on stability, quality, and pride in workmanship.
We're seeking an experienced Tool & Die Maker to support our production operations by building, repairing, rebuilding, and maintaining precision dies and tooling.
This is an opportunity for a skilled tradesperson who takes pride in precision craftsmanship, enjoys solving complex machining problems, and wants to work in a highly specialized manufacturing environment. Journeyman status is preferred, but experienced Tool & Die professionals with strong hands-on skills are encouraged to apply.
Our Commitment to Quality
As an ISO-certified manufacturer, we invest in our people by providing the training, tools, and support needed to succeed while encouraging continuous learning, craftsmanship, and process improvement.
What You'll Do
- Build new dies and completely rebuild existing production dies using engineering drawings and specifications
- Repair, modify, and troubleshoot existing dies and tooling to support production needs
- Perform precision drilling, tapping, milling, grinding, and machining operations to tolerances as close as .001"
- Set up and operate vertical mills using digital readouts to manufacture precision tooling components
- Machine pockets, complex shapes, and existing or worn components requiring accurate location and alignment
- Use dial indicators, edge finders, micrometers, calipers, and other precision measuring equipment to verify dimensions and tolerances
- Machine hardened materials using carbide drills and carbide end mills
- Perform basic lathe work, including turning shafts, shoulders, and simple V-threads
- Perform precision surface grinding, including dressing grinding wheels with complex radii, angles, and forms
- Grind flat and angled surfaces to create precise intersections and clean corners
- Perform precision lapping and fitting of holes for press fits and die buttons in both hardened and soft materials
- Resurface and sharpen production dies, including upper and lower die units
- Make adjustments to die timing and shut height following sharpening and resurfacing
- Operate Wire EDM equipment using established programs
- Rebuild and repair dies when formal engineering drawings are not available by using existing tooling, measurements, and machining knowledge
- Document die repairs and modifications so Engineering can update drawings and tooling records
- Troubleshoot tooling issues and collaborate with Engineering, Production, Maintenance, and other skilled trades to resolve manufacturing problems
- Assist with training and mentoring apprentices in Tool & Die processes and techniques
- Maintain accurate documentation and a clean, organized, and safety-focused work area

- Strong understanding of close-tolerance machining and precision measurement
- Experience machining hardened materials and working with tool steels
- Knowledge of heat-treated components, including determining appropriate grind stock prior to heat treatment
- Ability to use precision inspection equipment including micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, machinist scales, and related measuring tools
- Experience with Wire EDM equipment is preferred
- Strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to troubleshoot tooling problems independently
- Ability to work from drawings as well as reverse-engineer or repair existing tooling when complete documentation is unavailable
- Strong math, geometry, measurement, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
