Position Summary & Responsibilities:
Position Summary:
This Engineering Technician Specialist position is located in Topeka, KS and is within the Bureau of Traffic Engineering. This position serves as the permanent signing specialist within the Permanent Signing Unit, responsible for developing and reviewing permanent signing plans to ensure compliance with current policies, guidelines, standards, and engineering practices.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

Develops, drafts, and details both preliminary and final plans for permanent signing based on current standards and practices for final review and approval by the Signing Engineer.

Reviews plans prepared by others for conformance with current guidelines and standards and coordinates with Signing Engineer on any situation that does not fall within the standards and policies.

Coordinates the development and updating of a Permanent Signing Design Notebook, Permanent Signing Inspection Handbook, and Standard State Highway Signs Book. Assists with the revision to the permanent signing standards and other appropriate drawings.

Assists other KDOT Bureaus, consultants, district personnel, and any other entities concerned, in the preparation of permanent signing plans.

Assists the Permanent Signing Engineer with research of signing requests and questions from the public.

Investigates new developments in permanent signing materials and hardware installations to evaluate their feasibility for use in Kansas, under the general direction of the Permanent Signing Engineer.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
-
Five years of experience in engineering technical support.
-
Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency. Transcripts are required for education to be considered.

Valid Driver’s License at time of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications:
-
Experience in the use of CADD and computer applications.
-
Familiarity with basic traffic signing principles.

This position is subject to pre-employment physical capacity testing. The selected candidate will be required to pass the screening as a condition of employment.
