The Histotechnologist/Histotechnician performs technical duties within the Histology Department to support accurate and timely preparation of pathology specimens for diagnosis. This position works closely with pathologists and laboratory leadership to ensure high-quality laboratory services and compliance with established standards and procedures.

Position Reports To: Director of Laboratory Services
The Histotechnologist/Histotechnician operates and monitors the technical functions of the Histology Department while performing routine and specialized histopathology procedures. This position reports to the pathology section head, laboratory administrative director, or medical director/technical supervisor.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Perform routine and specialized histopathology procedures, including immunohistochemistry, while maintaining a high level of technical proficiency and accuracy.
- Demonstrate appropriate knowledge and expertise in accordance with pathologist expectations and laboratory policies regarding tissue processing and submission.
- Monitor, evaluate, and document quality control data to ensure testing accuracy and reliability.
- Identify, investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve technical, operational, and equipment-related issues throughout all phases of testing, including pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical processes.
- Perform routine maintenance, quality checks, and upkeep of laboratory equipment and work areas.
- Maintain accurate documentation in accordance with laboratory procedures and regulatory standards.
- Follow established safety practices, compliance requirements, and departmental policies.
- Collaborate effectively with pathologists and laboratory team members to support timely and accurate diagnostic results.
- Participate in departmental projects, process improvements, and other duties as assigned.
- Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) or Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) preferred, with applicable histology training and experience.
- Histotechnologist (HTL) or Histotechnician (HT) certification through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) preferred, or registry eligible.
- Candidates who are registry eligible at the time of hire must successfully obtain certification within 18 months of hire date to remain employed.
- Individuals with an MLT or MLS background who have completed appropriate histology coursework, clinical training, or relevant laboratory experience may be considered.
- Must successfully complete department orientation, competency checklist, and performance assessment within 3 months of hire date.
- Knowledge and experience with histology procedures, specimen handling, tissue processing, immunohistochemistry, laboratory equipment, and quality control practices preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently while maintaining accuracy, attention to detail, professionalism, and compliance with laboratory standards.
PRN employees are not guaranteed a minimum or maximum number of hours per pay period and are not assigned a regular or fixed work schedule. Available PRN hours are determined by patient care needs, departmental workload, staffing requirements, and operational demands.
PRN employees may be scheduled to temporarily fill staffing needs within their department, including coverage for open positions, vacations, extended absences, or leaves of absence until permanent staffing solutions are established.
To maintain active PRN employment status, employees are expected to:
- Meet and maintain all minimum qualifications and requirements for the position held.
- Maintain competency and proficiency within the scope of practice and assigned job responsibilities.
- Maintain current required licensure, registration, certifications, and credentials applicable to the position (including BLS, ACLS, PALS, or other required certifications, as applicable).
- Complete required clinical competencies, skills checklists, and departmental validation processes.
- Successfully complete all required orientation activities, annual education requirements, compliance training, and department-specific in-services.
- Participate in departmental communication by attending monthly staff meetings when required or reviewing and acknowledging meeting minutes.
- Complete a 90-day orientation evaluation and participate in annual performance evaluations thereafter.
- Communicate any changes in availability, licensure, certification status, or other employment-related requirements promptly to the Department Manager.
