Full Job Description

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Loss Mitigation Underwriter to join our mortgage servicing team. In this role, you will evaluate borrowers experiencing financial hardship to determine eligibility for loss mitigation solutions while ensuring compliance with investor, regulatory, and company requirements.

The ideal candidate has experience in mortgage servicing, default servicing, underwriting, loan modifications, foreclosure prevention, or loss mitigation and is skilled at analyzing financial information, interpreting investor guidelines, and making timely underwriting decisions that support both homeowners and investors.

Responsibilities

Review borrower financial information, hardship documentation, income, assets, and supporting documentation to determine eligibility for available loss mitigation solutions.
Evaluate applications for loan modifications, repayment plans, forbearance agreements, trial payment plans, and other foreclosure prevention programs.
Analyze loan files to ensure all required documentation has been received, including title work, escrow analysis, investor documentation, and supporting financial records.
Underwrite loss mitigation requests in accordance with investor, insurer, and regulatory guidelines.
Ensure compliance with Fannie Mae (FNMA), Freddie Mac (FHLMC), FHA, VA, Ginnie Mae (GNMA), CFPB, RESPA, and applicable state servicing requirements.
Document underwriting decisions and maintain accurate loan records within the mortgage servicing system.
Communicate underwriting decisions, approval conditions, and next steps with internal departments and servicing teams.
Collaborate with collections, customer service, foreclosure, bankruptcy, compliance, and quality control teams to ensure timely loan resolution.
Monitor regulatory timelines and escalate files that may impact compliance or investor requirements.
Identify underwriting exceptions and recommend appropriate workout solutions.
Assist with internal audits, quality reviews, and process improvement initiatives.
Deliver a high level of customer service while helping borrowers navigate available mortgage assistance options.

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required.
2+ years of experience in mortgage servicing, loss mitigation underwriting, default servicing, mortgage underwriting, or a related financial services role.
Strong knowledge of mortgage loss mitigation programs and foreclosure prevention options.
Experience interpreting investor guidelines for Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, VA, and Ginnie Mae.
Ability to analyze borrower financial information and make sound underwriting decisions.
Excellent analytical, organizational, and critical thinking skills.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel and Outlook.
Experience using MSP (ICE Mortgage Technology/Black Knight) or other mortgage servicing platforms.
Ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting regulatory and investor deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
Experience underwriting Flex Modification, FHA-HAMP, VA, USDA, and other government or GSE workout programs.
Knowledge of CFPB mortgage servicing rules, RESPA, investor audit standards, and mortgage compliance requirements.
Previous experience with mortgage quality control, compliance, or investor audits.
Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.
