Job Summary
The Student Affairs Coordinator will support the Program Manager and Program Director in advancing student success initiatives within the Physician Assistant (PA) Program in the School of Medicine. This position will assist and empower students to set and achieve academic success and personal goals through academic coaching, workshops, tutoring, and other services.
The Student Affairs Coordinator will provide early intervention and remediation to PA students in the School of Medicine who may be academically at risk, while operating within the policies and practices of the University and the PA Program. In addition, this role will help coordinate key student support services and programmatic activities, including orientation, interview days, White Coat Ceremony, and student wellness and well-being initiatives.
Key Responsibilities

Assists the Program Manager on preparing, developing, and implementing comprehensive strategies, systems, and learning experiences to promote student academic achievement, progression, and success.

Connects PA students with appropriate institutional and external resources (e.g., academic leadership, accessibility services, mental health support, and career advising) and promotes awareness and utilization of campus resources to enhance student engagement, success and sense of belonging.

Supports the planning, coordination, and execution of key PA student milestone events (e.g., Interview days, orientation, white coat ceremony, graduation), ensuring alignment with program values and student experience goals.

Collaborates with students to develop individualized learning plans addressing study strategies, time management, knowledge organization, test preparation, and self-directed learning skills.

Provides individualized academic coaching to support development of clinical reasoning, critical thinking, and effective learning behaviors.

Assists on designing, conducting, and evaluating workshops and programming on study strategies and preparation for PANCE licensing exams.

Maintains a working knowledge of best practices in academic success, learning science, remediation strategies, and active learning methodologies.

Monitors and evaluates student performance data to proactively identify at-risk students and coordinate timely outreach, interventions, and support plans.

Assists students with learning and study strategies (clinical reasoning, time management skills, self-directed learning, test-taking skills, etc.).

Supports the development, implementation, and ongoing management of a near-peer tutoring program, including tutor recruitment, training, scheduling, and program evaluation.

Assists in the development of programming that fosters community, belonging, and engagement across the student body.

Contributes to the design and delivery of student wellness initiatives that promote resilience, self-awareness, and sustainable performance in a rigorous academic environment.

Supports career development efforts by guiding students in professional identity formation, goal setting, and navigation of career pathways within the profession.

Builds and maintain positive working relationships with UT Tyler SOM staff, faculty, and departments to support holistic student development and success.

Exercises sound judgment and maintain confidentiality when coaching and advising students, ensures that all policies and procedures are consistent with FERPA, Title IX, and institutional policies.

Contributes to continuous improvement efforts through assessment of programs, student feedback, and outcome data.

Required Education/Experience

Bachelor’s degree in psychology, education, or related field.

Three (3) years of experience in a higher education setting and/or working with PA students.

A combination of education and experience may be considered.
Preferred Education/Experience

Experience working in higher education.

Experience in direct student support role with adult learners enrolled in higher education.

Experience conducting educational workshops, seminars, and groups, or classroom teaching.

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
This position is security-sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code Section 51.215, which authorizes the employer to obtain criminal history record information. Applicants selected must be able to show proof of eligibility to work in the United States by time of hire.

Clinical Position Requirements
Clinical positions require pre-screening through our Occupational Health department, including a drug test. Employees are required to obtain annual influenza vaccines.
