PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITY

The Assistant Manager of Product Quality Control – Tyler (AMPQC) participates in and provides direction for all activities within the East and Central Texas PQC department(s). This includes performing testing and services associated with assigned departmental duties within the scope of complexity defined by accrediting agencies, as well as participating in competency, proficiency, and educational opportunities.

The AMPQC contributes to educational activities such as tours, presentations, abstracts, and publications, while supporting mentoring, laboratory training, and competency evaluations. This position participates in critical document review and approval processes, error management, and process improvement initiatives. The AMPQC is also responsible for coordinating employee scheduling, providing employee counseling and resolution, offering technical guidance, managing workflow, and supporting goal setting and performance assessments. Additionally, the AMPQC exercises independent decision-making on matters impacting the East and Central Texas PQC department(s).

The AMPQC exemplifies and champions Carter BloodCare (CBC) Core Values and Code of Conduct, and adheres to CBC policies and applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). To support ongoing development and organizational goals, the AMPQC is required to attend meetings and training sessions, as assigned.

The AMPQC maintains active, current professional licensure and/or certifications as required by role-specific regulations and organizational requirements. Periodic travel between assigned work areas to support other locations/projects in CBC service regions is required.
Exempt employees are expected to maintain availability beyond standard business hours when business needs arise. Regular full-time attendance is required during normal working hours.

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctoral Degree(s) in Chemical, Biological, Clinical or Medical Laboratory Science, or Medical Technology from an accredited institution, as outlined in 42 CFR 493.1411(b)
Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) Board Certification: MLS(ASCP), MT(AAB), MLS(AMT), H(ASCP), SH(ASCP) or equivalent board certification and participation in the CME program, if applicable and required by accrediting agency

EXPERIENCE

Minimum of 3 years of non-waived and/or moderate to high complexity laboratory experience
Minimum of 2 years of previous supervisory or management experience
Minimum of 2 years of hematology and/or microbiology laboratory experience, preferred
Minimum of 2 years of blood center laboratory experience, preferred

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

Maintains strong working knowledge of blood banking policies, procedures, and applicable accrediting and regulatory requirements
Applies critical thinking and problem-solving skills to analyze complex situations, identify solutions, and provide clear guidance to internal and external customers, including appropriate documentation of issues and resolutions
Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing, with diverse audiences, ensuring information is conveyed clearly, accurately, and professionally
Demonstrates strong interpersonal and customer service skills, building effective relationships that promote trust, collaboration, and positive outcomes
Understands, interprets, and applies verbal and written instructions, guidelines, and technical information in a consistent and accurate manner
Utilizes laboratory mathematics and data analysis skills to compute, interpret, and report numerical data accurately
Demonstrates strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize workload, maintain attention to detail, and ensure consistent follow-through
Exercises sound judgment and decision-making, with awareness of the impact on departmental operations, service quality, and compliance

PHYSICAL/MENTAL STRESS FACTORS

Stress associated with exposure to potential biohazard areas, materials, blood, body fluids, chemicals, and cleaning solutions (OSHA Job Category I)
Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time
Ability to perform repetitive motion (e.g., typing, stripping tubing, pipetting)
Ability to detect varying degrees of hemolysis and distinguish the difference between colors and shades of colors
Mental stress due to high customer service demands and working with strict deadlines; Ability to exchange and document accurate information and perform testing under these high-stress and emergent conditions
Ability to multitask effectively and demonstrate organizational skills to meet departmental and inventory availability needs
Occasionally moves supplies weighing up to 40 pounds (with assistance, if needed)
Ability to frequently move around the lab and between other departments at CBC

Stress associated with periodic travel to other CBC service regions
Stress associated with extended or irregular work hours, and working weekends or holidays as needed to support operational emergency demands
Stress associated with an overnight stay in a location provided by CBC during inclement weather and/or disaster situations, as deemed necessary by the PQC management team
