SAFE Inc. POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION:

Outreach Advocate

HOURS:

WAGE:

40 hours/week

$19.15 Hourly

CLASSIFICATION:

Non-Exempt

ACCOUNTABILITY:

SAFE Program Director

DESCRIPTION:

The Outreach Advocate provides direct services to survivors of domestic or sexual violence, dating violence, stalking or other crime in SAFE’s Outreach Program and via SAFE’s Crisis Hotline. The Outreach Advocate provides back-up direct services to residents of SAFE’s emergency shelter. The Outreach Advocate also provides training and support to volunteers who provide services on SAFE’s crisis hotline.

QUALIFICATIONS OF THE OUTREACH ADVOCATE:

1. Demonstrated knowledge of domestic and sexual violence issues and the effects of domestic and sexual violence on survivors and their children;

2. Demonstrated ability to assist clients with developing and working toward achieving short and long range plans;

3. Demonstrated knowledge of best practices and current research in the field of domestic and sexual violence services;

4. Demonstrated ability to provide effective community advocacy on behalf of survivors of domestic and sexual violence;

5. Demonstrated knowledge of support group facilitation;

6. Demonstrated knowledge of local, state and federal service agencies, the services they provide and appropriate avenues for accessing services;

7. Excellent communication skills and the ability to relate effectively with a diverse population;

8. Demonstrated ability to form and maintain good working relationships with SAFE clients, staff members, volunteers, other agencies and community members;

9. Demonstrated ability to work within an empowerment framework and use a team-oriented approach with clients, co-workers, volunteers, other agencies and community members;

10. Demonstrated organizational and time management skills;

11. Demonstrated ability to work independently and exercise excellent judgment in a variety of situations;

12. Demonstrated proficiency in computer skills and general office tasks;

13. Educational/experience requirements include a relevant four year college degree and one year of experience in the provision of domestic violence services or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

RESONSIBILITIES OF THE OUTREACH ADVOCATE:

Direct Services:

1. Provide in-person advocacy and crisis line services to survivors of domestic and sexual violence, dating violence, stalking and other crimes;

2. Facilitate admission to SAFE’s emergency shelter;

3. Provide referrals to and advocacy with other agencies and services to assist survivors with achieving immediate and longer-term safety and self-sufficiency;

4. Assist survivors with safety planning;

5. Assist participants in accessing the criminal and civil legal systems, including providing assistance filing for Temporary Orders of Protection and providing support during hearings for Orders of Protection.

6. Provide crisis line back-up on a rotating basis;

7. Assure continuous volunteer and staff back-up coverage of SAFE’s twenty-four hour crisis hotline;

Program Responsibilities:

1. Attend and contribute to regular staff meetings;

2. Maintain accurate, timely documentation of all direct services using SAFE data collection materials and forms;

3. Prepare narrative and statistical information for submission with grant reports;

4. Work with the Program Director to develop outreach materials for domestic and sexual violence survivors.

5. Facilitate the work of Volunteer Advocates by:

a. Conducting outreach to recruit new Volunteers;

b. Coordinating and facilitating twice-yearly volunteer trainings;

c. Coordinating and supervising work of volunteer advocates;

d. Planning and implementing volunteer recognition activities;

e. Planning and implementing ongoing volunteer training activities.

General:

1. Adhere to SAFE’s Confidentiality Policy and Procedures;

2. Participate in agency and program evaluation activities;

3. Provide the Board of Directors with a written monthly report of activities and concerns;

4. Engage in a continuous process of learning and professional development;

5. Complete other tasks as assigned;

6. Request assistance from the SAFE Program Director in situations where legal or ethical obligations are unclear;

7. Act as a representative of SAFE in the community. The Executive Director, however, must approve any issuance of SAFE policy or position statements;

8. Read, be familiar with and adhere to the mission, policies, procedures and core values of SAFE
