Job Overview
Signature Group is seeking an experienced Controller to serve as a key member of our management team and provide financial leadership in a growing, multi-craft construction organization. We are seeking a highly motivated financial professional with strong leadership, analytical and problem-solving skills, sound business judgment, and a high level of accuracy, integrity, and accountability.
The Controller is responsible for overseeing and directing all accounting, financial reporting, treasury, budgeting, and compliance functions of the company. This position provides financial leadership, strategic insight, and operational support to ensure the organization's financial integrity and long-term success. The Controller manages construction-specific accounting functions, including job costing, work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, contract accounting, cash flow management, and project profitability analysis.
Working closely with executive leadership, project managers, and operations personnel, the Controller helps drive financial performance, maintain effective internal controls, support informed decision-making, and ensure compliance with all applicable accounting standards, regulations, and contractual requirements.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
Financial Management and Reporting
- Coordinate with accounting team for compliant and timely accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, and cash management.
- Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Ensure timely and accurate month-end and year-end closing processes.
- Manage financial reporting and analysis.
- Monitor company financial performance and recommend corrective actions when necessary.
- Maintain compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Prepare and review timely account reconciliation of balance sheet accounts.
Construction Accounting and Project Controls
- Oversee job costing systems and ensure accurate allocation of labor, materials, equipment, subcontractor, and overhead costs.
- Review project budgets, cost-to-complete estimates, and project profitability.
- Prepare and analyze Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and reporting.
- Collaborate with project managers to monitor project financial status and performance.
- Review change orders, contract modifications, and project billing processes.
- Identify and communicate financial risks and opportunities related to ongoing projects.
Cash Flow and Treasury Management
- Manage company cash flow, liquidity, and working capital requirements.
- Monitor daily cash positions and forecast short- and long-term cash needs.
- Maintain banking relationships and assist with treasury functions.
- Review and approve wire transfers, ACH payments, and cash disbursements.
- Oversee positive pay and fraud prevention controls.
- Ensure sufficient liquidity to support operational and strategic initiatives.
Budgeting and Forecasting
- Support budget and target setting initiatives set by management.
- Develop financial models and projections to support strategic decision-making.
- Monitor actual results against forecast/target expectations.
- Provide financial analysis and recommendations to leadership.
Compliance and Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and company policies.
- Establish and maintain effective internal controls and accounting procedures.
- Coordinate annual financial statement audits and tax reporting requirements.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory requirements.
- Manage reporting related to bonding, insurance, licensing, and contractual obligations.
- Maintain accurate and complete accounting records and documentation.
Leadership and Team Development
- Mentor accounting and finance personnel.
- Ensure departmental goals, priorities, and performance expectations are communicated and attained.
- Promote continuous improvement in accounting processes and procedures.
- Provide training, mentoring, and professional development opportunities for staff.
- Foster collaboration among finance, operations, and project management teams.
Strategic and Operational Support
- Serve as a trusted advisor to leadership on financial and operational matters.
- Support strategic planning and business development initiatives.
- Support acquisitions, integrations, and other corporate growth activities.
- Lead or participate in special projects and process improvement initiatives.
- Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned by management.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive accounting and financial management experience.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of leadership or supervisory experience.
- Strong knowledge of construction accounting principles, including job costing, percentage-of-completion accounting, and WIP reporting.
- Thorough understanding of financial reporting, budgeting, cash flow management, and internal controls.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software systems.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and financial compliance requirements.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA, CMA, or CGMA designation.
- Experience with construction ERP systems.
- Experience coordinating financial audits and managing bonding relationships.
- Knowledge of construction contracts, lien laws, and industry regulations.
