Full Job Description

The Achievement Center of Virginia Beach seeks a skilled and visionary Executive Director to oversee programs, services, and operations of the Achievement Center.

The mission of the Achievement Center is to give "at-promise students (those labeled as "at-risk" or "youth in high- risk situations") an opportunity to become productive citizens in a supportive environment that provides education, training, job opportunities and community resources to promote personal and financial stability for youth and families. This mission is based on the core belief that all students have value, and all students can learn and live values that promote good citizenship, successful families, and economic advancements. The Achievement Center seeks to improve public safety with an emphasis on best practices for interacting with youth.

The Position

The Executive Director is the key management leader of the organization. The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the administration, programs, and strategic plan of the organization. Other key duties include fundraising, marketing, and community outreach. The position reports directly to the Board of Directors. The Executive Director works collaboratively with community stakeholders in analyzing, planning, directing, coordinating, and implementing juvenile justice reform, and meeting the needs of youth in foster care.

Key Responsibilities

Leads, supports, and encourages staff in positive youth development. Serves as the leading role model for both staff and youth by exemplifying positive communication, collaboration, peaceful conflict resolution, ethical conduct, and self-control.

Determines program goals and develops strategic plans for the organization independently or jointly with the Board to identify and develop specific program requirements consistent with the mission of the organization following best practices.

Provide visionary leadership to the organization and translate that vision into further program development.

Oversee the day-to-day operations and programs to ensure that The Achievement Center is a well-managed, highly respected organization for youth and their families.

Maintain a complete understanding of the organization's financial position and outlook; ensure fiscal responsibility and security as well as develops resources sufficient to ensure the financial health of the organization.

Responsible to actively engage in fundraising, grant writing and other areas which generate

revenue.

Responsible for the fiscal integrity of the organization, to include submission to the Board of a proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements, which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization.

Responsible for fiscal management that generally anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position.

Responsible for implementation of programs that carry out the mission and programs of the organization.

Maintain sound relationships with partners, supporters, as well as governmental and non-governmental entities at the local, state, and federal level.

Provide collaborative and impactful leadership in the field, by working as often as possible in common cause with likeminded and similarly situated organizations that are also in the field of juvenile justice and foster care.

Responsible for the hiring and retention of competent, qualified staff. Monitors the work of staff to improve performance; evaluates and advises on organization, methods, and procedures.

Develops plans and strategies to monitor and evaluate program efficiency and effectiveness based on established goals outcomes and benchmarks. Sets performance measures for programs.

Communicates with the public and the media on programmatic and community issues; develops marketing strategies to promote program services.

Responsible for signing all notes, agreements, and other instruments made and entered into and on behalf of the organization.

Actual Job Responsibilities

1. Report to and work closely with the Board of Directors to seek their involvement in policy

decisions, fundraising and to increase the overall visibility of the organization.

2. Supervise and collaborate with organization staff.

3. Strategic planning and implementation.

4. Planning and operation of annual budget.

5. Serve as the organization's primary spokesperson to constituents, the media, and the

general public.

6. Establish and maintain relationships with various organizations and utilize those relation-

ships to strategically enhance the organization's mission.

7. Engage in fundraising and developing other revenues.

8. Oversee marketing and other communications efforts.

9. Attend Board of Directors and committee meetings.

10. Establishing employment and administrative policies and procedures for all functions

and for the day-to-day operation of the nonprofit.

11. Review and approve contracts for services.

12. Other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.

Professional Qualifications Needed

* A master's degree is preferred; bachelor's degree is required.

* Transparent and high integrity leadership.

* Three or more years senior nonprofit management experience.

* Experience and skill in working with a Board of Directors.

* High level strategic thinking and planning. Ability to envision and convey the

organization's strategic future to the staff, board, volunteers, and donors.

* Ability to effectively communicate the organization's mission to donors, volunteers, and

and the overall community.

* Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff.

* A history of successfully generating new revenue streams and improving financial results.

* Active fundraising experience. Excellent donor relations skill and understanding of the

funding community.

* Previous success in establishing relationships with individuals and organizations of

influence including funders, partner agencies and volunteers.

* Solid organizational abilities, including planning, delegating, program development and

task facilitation.

* Strong financial management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision

making and reporting.

* Strong written and oral communication skills including public speaking.

*Strong Work ethic with a high degree of energy.

*Demonstrated knowledge and skill in the application of conflict resolution, crisis response

and management, and positive employee/management relations.

*A working knowledge of the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice, children in foster care,

juvenile social histories, evidence-based practices/data driven decision making and screen-

ing assessments used by the juvenile court.

*Previous experience with youth development work including casework, group counseling,

the foster care system, juvenile rehabilitation, or social work for youth (12-21 years of age)

is desirable.

Salary Range $70,000-$100,000 commensurate with experience.
