This position is responsible for planning and delivering whole group reading and writing instruction to help students prepare for the HiSET reading and writing exams in order to earn their High School Equivalency Diploma. Works with students to determine their needs and integrates College and Career Readiness Standards, 21st Century Employability Skills, and CASAS GOALS competencies.
The Van G. Miller Adult Learning Center serves adult students who are earning their High School Equivalency Diploma, learning the English language, and/or receiving workforce training as Adult Education and Literacy students. Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Teaches both morning and evening reading and language arts classes with the High School Completion program as assigned.
- Teaches face-to-face, online, remote, blended/hybrid, and distance learning classes in both synchronous and asynchronous modalities.
- Provides instruction in reading, writing, composition, grammar, proofreading, typing, and formatting of word processing documents.
- Updates, expands, improves, and maintains a standards-based curriculum that prepares students for high-stakes testing.
- Prepares standards-based lesson plans, activities, assignments, and assessments that are tailored to specific skill levels.
- Delivers group instruction to help students prepare for the HiSET reading and writing exams.
- Integrates other content areas (e.g., civics, science, social studies) into the English courses when possible.
- Creates and expands reading and language arts content for students in the Canvas learning management system and using the Google Suite. Instructs students on how to utilize the system.
- Oversees HSC students who are enrolled in the asynchronous online courses.
- Implements instructional methods and materials that are appropriate for meeting stated objectives.
- Assesses student progress on a regular basis.
- Utilizes classroom technology and integrates digital literacy into lessons.
- Uses explicit instruction and participatory learning techniques.
- Works with a wide array of students who are primarily adults but as young as 16 years and 9 months of age.
- Provides guidance, support, and motivation for students who have encountered academic difficulties.
- Ensures class compliance with federal, state, and college requirements.
- Makes recommendations for purchases of new teaching materials, books, and digital tools.
- Maintains daily attendance records for face-to-face, remote, and online students.
- Maintains integrity of assessments.
- Identifies areas of student need and differentiates instruction. Provides instructional accommodations as needed.
- Prepares students for postsecondary education and training, employment, and better employment.
- Assists Coordinator with the class placement of students.
- Implements state and federal initiatives in the classroom.
- Collaborates with other content area teachers and program coordinator for student success.
- Attends regular staff meetings and professional development.
- Participates in internal and external committees as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Unless otherwise approved under Hawkeye’s remote work policy, regular on campus and/or onsite attendance is considered an essential function of the position.
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Reading, English Language Arts, Communications or closely related field.
- One (1) year of teaching experience.
- Demonstrated ability to work a flexible schedule which includes Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
- Demonstrated ability to teach year-round, including summers.
- Demonstrated ability to work innovatively, individually as well as in teams.
- Demonstrated ability to work with a culturally diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the general public.
- Ability to demonstrate strong interpersonal communication.
- Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite, Google applications, and video conferencing technology.
- Demonstrated ability to execute organization and department policies and procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to handle confidential/sensitive information with discretion.
- K-12 Teaching Certification- Master's in Education, English, or related field- Experience in Adult Education and Literacy, Adult Basic Education, and/or High School Equivalency Diploma (HiSET, GED, etc.) exam preparation.
Anticipated schedule is: Monday-Thursday daytime hours with Tuesday/Thursday being a longer workday which includes evening hours until 8:30 pm.
Requires skills for succeeding in an office environment, using technology. Requires good hand-eye coordination including visual acuity to use a keyboard and read technical information; arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp. Work is performed in an office setting. Sit, stand, bend, lift and move intermittently during working hours. During the course of the day, interact with students, faculty and staff in person, by telephone and computer.

Wages will be commensurate with the candidate’s education, experience and internal equity.
The wage range for this position begins at $19.33 per hour (approximately $40,200 annually).
