Full Job Description

Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Shelter Support Worker to join our team in providing essential services to individuals experiencing homelessness and underserved communities. This role offers an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful difference by supporting residents through crisis intervention, case management, and daily operations within a dynamic shelter environment. The Shelter Support Worker will play a vital role in fostering a safe, respectful, and empowering atmosphere for all residents while ensuring compliance with safety protocols and confidentiality standards. This paid position is perfect for energetic individuals passionate about social work, behavioral health, and community service.

Duties

Provide direct support to residents, including intake assessments, crisis intervention, and ongoing case management to meet their individual needs.
Assist with behavioral health support, conflict resolution, and de-escalation techniques to maintain a safe environment for residents and staff.
Supervise daily activities within the shelter, ensuring adherence to safety protocols such as manual handling, security procedures, and resident confidentiality.
Support residents with childcare, working with youth and families to promote stability and well-being.
Maintain accurate documentation through data entry, filing, data collection, and writing detailed reports on resident progress and incidents.
Administer medications following proper protocols when required and assist with basic first aid or CPR in emergency situations.
Collaborate effectively with culturally diverse communities and coordinate services related to programs and home & community care initiatives.
Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Proven supervising experience in social services or shelter settings.
Strong communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with residents from diverse backgrounds.
Experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness, substance use disorders, mental health conditions, or high-risk populations.
Knowledge of behavioral health principles, conflict management strategies, crisis intervention techniques, and de-escalation methods.
Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications for data entry, reporting, and record keeping.
Manual handling training preferred.
Ability to work collaboratively with teams supporting underserved communities while maintaining resident confidentiality.
Experience working with families, youth, or individuals from culturally diverse communities is highly valued.
