Full Job Description

Position Summary

The Full-Time Medicolegal Death Investigator performs skilled, technical work in the investigation of deaths that fall under the jurisdiction of the Belmont County Coroner. This position requires independent decision-making, adherence to statutory requirements, and the ability to interact professionally and compassionately with families, law enforcement, medical personnel, and the public. Work is performed primarily in the field and involves exposure to sensitive, stressful, and sometimes hazardous environments.

This position is on-call and requires the ability to work 24-hour shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Full-time schedule is 1 week on-call, 1 week off.

Preference will be given to candidates who are available for the Full-Time position. (Option for Part-Time).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Respond to reported deaths throughout Belmont County during assigned on-call shifts.
Conduct medicolegal investigations in accordance with Ohio Revised Code and office protocols.
Perform external examinations of decedents, documenting identifying features, injuries, medical interventions, and postmortem changes.
Conduct thorough scene investigations, including assessment of environmental factors, body position, lividity, rigor, and other relevant findings.
Interview family members, witnesses, law enforcement, EMS, and healthcare providers to obtain medical history, social history, and investigative information.
Determine jurisdiction of reportable deaths.
Collect, document, and preserve evidence when appropriate, maintaining chain of custody.
Photograph scenes and remains in accordance with office standards.
Coordinate the removal and transport of decedents, including completion of required documentation.
Facilitate identification procedures, including visual identification, fingerprinting, dental comparison, and other approved methods.
Complete detailed written reports, scene narratives, and investigative summaries in a timely and accurate manner.
Obtain and review medical records, EMS reports, and law enforcement reports relevant to the investigation.
Assist with toxicology submissions, specimen collection, and coordination with forensic laboratories.
Communicate with funeral homes, hospitals, and other agencies regarding case status and release procedures.
Provide compassionate, professional interactions with next-of-kin, including explanation of the Coroner’s Office process and available resources.
Testify in court proceedings when required.
Maintain confidentiality and comply with all legal, ethical, and professional standards.
Participate in continuing education, training, and certification requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

Certified Medicolegal Death Investigator (ABMDI or equivalent) OR willingness to obtain certification within six (6) months of hire. (Paid for by Department)
OR a Bachelor’s Degree in a related forensic, investigative, or medical field.
Ability to work 24-hour on-call shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Must pass a criminal background check and drug test.
Valid driver’s license.
Ability to lift, move, or assist with the movement of decedents in various environments.
Ability to work in adverse weather, confined spaces, and physically demanding scenes.
Strong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in medicolegal death investigation, law enforcement, forensic science, or related fields.
Knowledge of human anatomy, medical terminology, and trauma patterns.
Familiarity with investigative interviewing and evidence documentation.
Experience working with grieving families or in emotionally sensitive environments.

Work Conditions

Frequent exposure to biohazards, bodily fluids, strong odors, and potentially hazardous environments.
Work performed in homes, public spaces, hospitals, outdoor locations, and occasionally high-risk scenes.
Requires availability during assigned on-call periods and the ability to respond promptly to scene locations.

Compensation

Full-Time: Salary, health insurance, Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS)
Part-Time: Daily on-call rate
Pay based on experience.
