Lead Yard Associate
We are a leading, well-respected, full-service lumber yard, featuring a wide range of building materials and supplies for contractors, and DIY enthusiasts, including hardware, roofing, fencing, vinyl siding, insulation, paint, windows, doors, and millwork, to meet our all of our customers’ needs. Additionally, we also serve as a resource for the community, contributing to a variety of local development and construction projects.
Reporting to the General Manager, the Lead Yard Associate will be responsible for supporting and directing daily yard operations to ensure materials are received, staged, loaded, and delivered safely and accurately. In this role, you will be working hands on in the yard, while supporting customer service, inventory accuracy, delivery readiness, and overall yard organization. The Lead Yard Associate helps set the standard for productivity, safety, and teamwork.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBLITIES
Yard Operations
Perform daily yard work including receiving, stocking, staging, loading, unloading, and moving materials.
Build accurate loads and schedule for customer pickup and delivery.
Pull materials from invoices, sales orders, or create tickets.
Operate forklifts and other yard equipment safely and efficiently.
Keep materials organized and stored in the proper yard locations.
Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly yard, warehouse, and loading area.
Supervision of Yard Employees
Direct the daily work of yard associates and trainees.
Help assign tasks and keep employees focused on priorities throughout the day.
Train employees on safe lifting, forklift use, loading procedures, material locations, and yard .expectations.
Monitor quality of work and correct mistakes as they arise.
Lead by example in productivity, safety, teamwork, and customer service.
Communicate employee concerns, workflow issues, and support needs to the General Manager.
Customer Service
Assist customers and contractors with loading materials and locating products.
Help ensure pickup orders are pulled accurately and handled in a timely manner.
Provide courteous, helpful, and professional service in all yard interactions.
Help resolve order or loading issues by communicating with the sales associate or General Manager.
Inventory and Receiving
Assist with receiving incoming materials and checking shipments for accuracy, damage, or shortages.
Ensure materials are stocked correctly and inventory areas remain organized.
Support cycle counts and physical inventory as needed.
Report damaged materials, shortages, or inventory discrepancies promptly.
Delivery and Logistics Coordination
Help stage and load delivery trucks accurately and on time.
Support delivery readiness, by making sure materials are complete and secure.
Assist with routine inspections of forklifts, trucks, and yard equipment.
Report maintenance or safety issues immediately.
Equipment and Facility Management
Ensure forklifts, trucks, and yard equipment are operated safely and properly.
Perform routine equipment checks and report maintenance needs promptly.
Maintain safe yard traffic flow and equipment operating areas.
Help maintain overall yard cleanliness, housekeeping, and safety standards.
Physical and Mental Requirements (ADA)
Stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday.
Lift and carry materials up to 80 pounds.
Operate forklifts and material handling equipment.
Bend, reach, stoop, and climb as required during yard operations.
Maintain focus and decision-making ability in a fast-paced outdoor work environment.
Working Conditions
Primarily outdoor work environment exposed to weather conditions
Frequent interaction with contractors, customers, and delivery drivers
Regular use of forklifts and material handling equipment
Noise levels typical of warehouse and yard operations
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or GED
Valid driver’s license
Forklift Certification, OSHA 30 preferred.
1 to 2 years of experience in lumber yard operations, building materials, warehouse operations, delivery support, or related industry
Prior experience leading, training, or directing other yard employees preferred.
SKILLS
Proficiency in forklift and material handling equipment operations
Knowledge of building materials, dimensional lumber, and related products
Ability to load, unload, stage, and move materials safely and accurately
Ability to direct and support yard employees in daily tasks
Customer service and contractor communication skills
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Ability to support receiving, stocking, and delivery preparation
Knowledge of yard safety practices and safe material handling procedures
Basic computer skills for communication, invoicing, and inventory support
Ability to work productively in a fast-paced outdoor environment

Pay: $60,000.00 - $65,000.00 per year
