Requires a master’s Degree and 11+ years of direct or related work experience
Salary Range: $55,700 – $72,700

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: This position is located in Mahoning County, Canfield, OH.
The Ohio State University Extension (OSUE) seeks an Educator to work collaboratively with county, area, and state teams of OSU Extension professionals, as well as local agency leaders, community partners, and volunteers. The Educator will provide leadership for Agriculture and Natural Resources and 4-H Youth Development programming that addresses local and area needs, with particular attention to urban audiences and community engagement. Using both formal and informal methods of community assessment, the Educator will identify educational needs and opportunities and will design, implement, and teach educational programs for youth and adult audiences through school enrichment, community programs, and volunteer-led initiatives. The Educator may replicate and implement existing Extension programs while also developing new educational resources, curriculum, publications, and programming to meet local needs. The Educator will develop promotional materials, lead and support committees and volunteer groups, and establish and maintain community partnerships that support program goals. Responsibilities include participating in discussions with county representatives regarding program funding, assisting with management of the county Extension budget, and seeking external funding to support local programming. The Educator will actively participate as a member of county, multi-county, and state Extension teams to advance the mission, vision, and values of Ohio State University Extension.
Candidates must be willing to work flexible hours with a minimum of supervision. Hours could include days, evenings, and weekends.
Candidate must have your own transportation to travel to programming, events, and other.
- Design, implement, and teach community-based educational programs that respond to local needs. Develop new learning resources and educational materials to support program delivery. Provide leadership and programming in the areas of Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) and 4-H Youth Development by conducting proactive education and applied research programs and developing products to meet current and future needs of new and non-traditional audiences in Mahoning County.
- Serve as the lead for urban programming for OSU Extension in Mahoning County, with focus areas that build upon existing programming in urban agriculture, local foods, and youth development. Lead school enrichment programming with an emphasis on agriculture in the classroom and STEM education. Work with OSU Extension faculty and staff to develop educational materials and programming that meet the needs of schools throughout the county. Utilize existing STEM activities and events developed by OSU Extension and promote 4-H opportunities, events, and membership through innovative school-based programming.
- Coordinate needs assessments with OSU Extension colleagues, teachers, and school leadership to ensure programming meets local needs. Engage and utilize volunteers to support program implementation. Communicate effectively with clientele, peers, and support teams. Provide expertise in the development, enhancement, and support of statewide Extension and 4-H programming, including participation in a State 4-H Design Team or similar statewide initiative, with the specific specialization area negotiated and approved by the State 4-H Leader. Dedicate time to statewide efforts and actively contribute to county and multi-county Extension teams, including holding leadership roles when appropriate.
- Lead management of volunteer programs in Mahoning County related to Master Gardener Volunteers and the Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist program and assist with management of 4-H volunteers, in coordination with Extension office staff. Assist in the identification, recruitment, training, and development of volunteer leaders necessary to carry out relevant programming. Coordinate volunteer efforts to support the mission of OSU Extension and meet the educational needs of Mahoning County residents.
- Participate as a member of county, multi-county, and state Extension teams to advance the mission, vision, and values of OSU Extension and Mahoning County programming. Establish and maintain partnerships with community organizations and agencies that support program goals. Contribute to securing external funds and resources to support local programming. Engage in professional development activities that lead to the development of subject matter expertise and participate in appropriate in-service trainings.
- Evaluate educational programs and dissemination methods to determine effectiveness and impact. Utilize existing evaluation instruments and tools to assess teaching effectiveness, program quality, and program outcomes. Use evaluation results to inform program improvement and future program development.
- Participate in community events and functions to promote OSU Extension programming and build community awareness. Utilize news media, promotional materials, and outreach strategies to communicate program opportunities and impact. Participate in discussions with county representatives and stakeholders regarding program funding and support.
QUALIFICATIONS: An earned Bachelor’s or Master’s degree at the time of hire is required. Preference will be given to candidates with a degree in agriculture or natural resources or other educationally related area (examples are: food science, biology, science education). The successful candidate will have strong written and oral communication skills and experience in working with diverse clientele and organizations. Demonstrated success in working as part of a team and initiating collaborative partnerships is sought. Leadership ability and strong teaching and subject matter expertise in at least one area of agriculture are necessary. Demonstrated experience in the areas of farm management/economics, animal sciences, volunteer management and/or community partnerships. Candidates must be willing to work flexible hours with a minimum of supervision. Hours could include days, evenings, and weekends.
Desired Experience:
Training and work experience related to education, youth development, volunteerism, soil science, horticulture, science education, and natural resources.
Demonstrated experience relating to community engagement.
Demonstrated success connecting with community partners for grants and contracts relating to education, agriculture, horticulture and other programs related to the position.
