We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Mathematics 7–12 Certified Teacher to teach 8th Grade Math and Algebra in a middle school setting. The ideal candidate must possess strong instructional practices, excellent classroom management skills, and the ability to create engaging, standards-based lessons that support student achievement and academic growth.
The Mathematics Teacher will provide rigorous instruction aligned to New York State standards while fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and inquiry-based learning. The teacher will utilize data-driven instruction, differentiate lessons to meet the needs of diverse learners, and collaborate with colleagues, families, and school leadership to ensure student success.

Merrick Academy is one of the first charter schools to open in New York City and the first to open (2000) in Queens. With a rich history and deep roots in the local community, Merrick Academy is an all-inclusive, independent Charter School with approximately 950 students in grades K-8 and a faculty and staff of 125. Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Teach 8th Grade Mathematics and Algebra using standards-aligned curriculum and instructional practices
- Plan and deliver engaging lessons that promote student achievement and mathematical reasoning
- Differentiate instruction to support diverse learning styles and academic needs
- Utilize student assessment data to inform instruction and intervention strategies
- Prepare students for New York State assessments and success in advanced mathematics coursework
- Maintain a structured, positive, and academically rigorous classroom environment
- Collaborate with colleagues, instructional coaches, and administration to improve instructional practices
- Integrate instructional technology and blended learning strategies into classroom instruction
- Monitor and document student progress through assessments, progress reports, and report cards
- Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress and classroom expectations
- Attend staff meetings, professional development sessions, and school events as required
- Supervise the health, safety, and welfare of students at all times
- Utilize all avenues to incorporate past lessons, performance standards, and staff development sessions to design and deliver outstanding lessons
- Manage classroom administration including attendance, grading, classroom organization, and maintaining instructional materials
- Organize classroom materials and visual aids in an educationally appropriate way
- Interact with students in a firm, positive, and constructive manner at all times
- Engage in conversation and behavior that uplifts and guides children
- Recognize and encourage positive student behavior

- Support positive connections among students and the larger community that improve academic and social development
- Establish and maintain student discipline and classroom culture consistent with school policies and procedures
- Collaborate and consult with educational professionals and support staff regarding student needs
Qualifications & Behavioral Competencies
- Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree preferred
- Active New York State Mathematics 7–12 Teaching Certification required
- Ability to teach Algebra and middle school mathematics concepts effectively
- Minimum of 2 years teaching experience preferred
- Experience working with middle school students preferred
- Working knowledge and comfort level with instructional technology
- Strong written, grammatical, presentation, and verbal communication skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills required to examine student data and promote achievement
- Proven ability to work collaboratively and flexibly with a diverse team of teachers and administrators
- Knowledge of adolescent development and demonstrated experience implementing differentiated instruction
