Designated Interpreter – Medical Residency Program

Location: Ann Arbor, MI
Job Type: Full-Time Contract (1 Year, with potential extension up to 3 years)
Schedule: Clinical and academic hours based on residency schedule

A Rare Opportunity in Medical Interpreting & Academia

We are seeking two highly skilled Designated Interpreters (DIs) to join an innovative and collaborative interpreting team supporting a Deaf Family Medicine Resident in a hospital and clinical training environment. This is an immediate opening for interpreters who are passionate about healthcare, higher education, accessibility, and the evolving future of the interpreting profession.

This role goes far beyond traditional interpreting models. You will become an integrated member of a dynamic medical and academic team, working closely with hospital staff, faculty physicians, administrators, our agency, and the resident to build communication systems that support success in the fast-paced world of medical training.

The selected interpreters will be chosen jointly by the client and our agency based on both professional qualifications and linguistic compatibility, ensuring a strong and sustainable interpreting partnership.

Key Responsibilities

Provide designated interpreting services in clinical, academic, and professional settings
Support communication during patient interactions, rounds, lectures, meetings, and hospital activities
Collaborate with the Deaf resident, co-interpreters, administrators, and medical staff to create effective communication workflows
Adapt to the evolving needs of residency training and healthcare environments
Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical standards in all medical settings
Participate as an active member of a supportive DI team

Ideal Candidates Will Have

Strong Signed English Transliteration skills
Experience or interest in medical interpreting and healthcare environments
Ability to process and interpret complex medical terminology
Flexibility, professionalism, and strong teamwork skills
Interest in designated interpreting and collaborative communication models
Ability to navigate fast-paced, high-stakes environments with confidence

Medical interpreting experience is highly valued, but interpreters with strong foundational skills and a willingness to learn are encouraged to apply.
