Full Job Description

The Institute on Aging is a San Francisco based nonprofit that helps older adults and adults with disabilities live with independence, dignity, and connection across California. Our Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) brings medical care, social engagement, and daily support together under one roof so participants can keep thriving in their community.

We are hiring a Life Enrichment Manager (internal title: Participant Engagement Manager) to provide leadership, clinical direction, and strategic oversight of activity programming for On Lok PACE participants at IOA. You will supervise the Activity team, establish a cohesive, outcomes-driven therapeutic recreation framework, and build a PACE dementia engagement program that sets the standard for person-centered care.

What you will do

Lead daily programming. Design and deliver engaging, purposeful activities across multiple day rooms for older adults and adults with disabilities, including participants living with dementia.
Build the dementia engagement program. Develop and oversee a structured, evidence-informed dementia and memory care program grounded in person-centered practice.
Lead a team. Supervise, coach, and develop engagement and activity staff, setting a high bar for warmth and quality.
Grow the volunteer program. Recruit, train, and coordinate volunteers who extend the reach of daily programming.
Partner on care. Work alongside the interdisciplinary care team to align engagement plans with each participant's goals, interests, and abilities.
Assess and adapt. Evaluate participant needs and continually tailor programming so every person is reached, not just entertained.
Keep it compliant. Maintain documentation and ensure programming meets PACE and applicable regulatory standards.
Run the operation. Manage activity calendars, supplies, budgets, and special events.

Education and credentials

Degree. Bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Recreation Therapy, Music Therapy, Gerontology, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
Certification. CTRS (Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist) strongly preferred. ADC, ACC, or COTA considered based on experience and demonstrated expertise in therapeutic recreation.
First Aid and CPR. Required within six months of hire.

Experience

Minimum 8 years of experience in activity programming for older adults.
Minimum 3 years of supervisory experience.
Strong background in dementia care, with experience in adult day health, PACE, long-term care, community living, or memory care settings. Dementia certification preferred.
Demonstrated ability to motivate and develop staff, lead change, and manage team dynamics.
Experience conducting recreation assessments, developing care plans, and ensuring regulatory compliance in ADHC or PACE environments.
Experience applying therapeutic recreation principles to support participants with behavioral, cognitive, or psychosocial needs using non-pharmacological approaches.

Strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize, delegate, and balance clinical, operational, and leadership demands.
Creative, flexible, and enthusiastic, with a genuine passion for participant engagement.
Cultural humility when working with multilingual, multicultural participants, families, and staff.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, EHR documentation, and activity scheduling systems.
