Project-Based 1099 Opportunity – Sacramento Area Opportunity Summary
We are a technology consulting company seeking established independent IT consultants, sole proprietors, or IT services businesses for occasional project-based client support, senior technical consulting, and defined IT project work in the Sacramento area.
This is a 1099 independent contractor opportunity, not an employee position. It is intended for experienced independent professionals or businesses that already provide IT support, network support, systems administration, cloud administration, project consulting, or related technology services to their own clients or to multiple companies.
Contractors may be offered individual service calls, defined client projects, project assessments, implementation work, troubleshooting engagements, or technical advisory assignments based on client needs, contractor availability, location, experience, and agreed project terms. Contractors may accept or decline any offered engagement.
There are no guaranteed hours, no required minimum availability, no exclusivity, and no promise of future work. Each accepted engagement will be confirmed separately in writing, including the scope of work, project location, expected deliverables, timeline, rate, and payment terms.
This opportunity is best suited for senior independent consultants located in or near the Sacramento area who are available for occasional onsite client work throughout Sacramento and surrounding areas.
Independent Contractor Classification Notice
This opportunity is designed for independent contractors who control the manner and means of performing accepted work, subject to the agreed scope of work, client requirements, security obligations, and project deadlines.
Contractors are expected to operate independently, maintain their own business or independent consulting practice, use their own tools and equipment where appropriate, invoice for completed work, and remain free to provide services to other clients or businesses.
This opportunity is not intended for individuals seeking regular employment, guaranteed hours, company-controlled schedules, mandatory shifts, ongoing staff augmentation, employee-style supervision, or a guaranteed pathway into a staff role.
Work requiring fixed schedules, mandatory availability, internal operations responsibilities, staff management, employee-style training, company-directed methods, or open-ended duties will be evaluated separately as W2 employment or another legally appropriate arrangement.
A 1099 label or independent contractor agreement does not, by itself, determine worker status in California. California states that worker status is not determined merely by labeling someone an independent contractor, using an independent contractor agreement, or issuing a 1099 instead of a W2. The IRS also looks at the overall relationship, including behavioral control, financial control, and the type of relationship between the parties.
Project Services That May Be Offered
Depending on experience and the specific written scope of work, independent contractors may be offered engagements involving:
- Defined Level 1–3 desktop, endpoint, cloud, network, or systems support issues.
- Onsite or remote troubleshooting for specific client issues.
- Senior technical assessment of client environments.
- Business network design, troubleshooting, documentation, or remediation.
- Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, DNS, email, identity, endpoint, and cloud administration tasks.
- Firewall, VLAN, Wi-Fi, switching, routing, endpoint security, and connectivity troubleshooting.
- Multi-day or multi-week client IT projects with defined deliverables.
- Technical project planning, scoping, implementation, documentation, or handoff.
- Coordination with client contacts, third-party vendors, ISPs, property teams, and project stakeholders for accepted engagements.
- Project status updates, completion notes, findings, risks, recommendations, and next steps.
- Technical recommendations related to client infrastructure, support needs, risk reduction, or future project planning.
- Identification of out-of-scope, high-risk, or specialized issues requiring additional approval, escalation, or a separate scope of work.
Contractors are responsible for determining the appropriate technical approach, sequence, tools, and methods needed to complete accepted work, consistent with the agreed project scope, client environment, security requirements, and applicable professional standards.
Work Not Included in This 1099 Opportunity
The following are not part of this independent contractor opportunity and would need to be evaluated separately as W2 employment or another legally appropriate arrangement:
- Mandatory recurring helpdesk shifts.
- Mandatory on-call rotations.
- Fixed weekly schedules controlled by the company.
- Open-ended “other duties as assigned.”
- General phone or email coverage for the company.
- Day-to-day supervision as company staff.
- Required internal staff meetings unrelated to a specific client project.
- Required company training on how to perform the work.
- Employee-style performance management.
- Managing company employees, apprentice consultants, or internal staff.
- Building, operating, or managing the company’s internal business as part of the contractor role.
- Internal operations work not covered by a separate written scope.
- Exclusive work arrangements.
- Work where the company controls the details of how the work must be performed rather than the agreed result or deliverable.
This distinction matters because the IRS treats instructions about when, where, how, what tools to use, what sequence to follow, evaluation systems, and training as behavioral-control factors. More detailed control points more toward employee status.
Contractor Qualifications
Qualified contractors should be able to demonstrate:
- An independently established IT consulting, network support, systems administration, cybersecurity, cloud administration, or technology services business or practice.
- Ability to provide a completed W-9 before payment.
- Ability to invoice for completed work.
- Ability to accept or decline offered engagements.
- Ability to provide services to other clients or businesses without restriction, subject to confidentiality and conflict obligations.
- Ability to use appropriate contractor-owned tools, laptop, vehicle, diagnostic equipment, and software, except where client security requires client-provided systems, credentials, or proprietary access materials.
- Ability to maintain any required business registration, local business tax registration, license, insurance, or other documentation applicable to the contractor’s services.
- Strong independent technical judgment.
- Ability to manage accepted projects, deliverables, timelines, client communications, and vendor coordination within the agreed scope of work.
- Ability to document completed work, issue findings, risks, recommendations, and next steps clearly.
- Ability to communicate professionally with technical and non-technical client contacts.
- Ability to identify out-of-scope work and recommend a separate scope, escalation path, or next-step plan.
For California’s business-to-business exception, the DIR lists multiple requirements, including that the service provider be a sole proprietor or business entity, be free from control, have a written contract with payment terms, have a separate business location, be independently established, be able to contract with others, advertise to the public, provide its own tools/equipment where appropriate, negotiate rates, and set its own hours/location consistent with the work.
Preferred Experience
- 10+ years of hands-on IT support, network support, systems administration, technical consulting, or related client-facing technical services experience.
- Experience independently supporting business clients in professional environments.
- Experience with PC/Mac environments, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, DNS, email systems, business networks, Wi-Fi systems, VLANs, firewalls, endpoint security, hardware diagnostics, A/V systems, security systems, smart home technology, and cloud administration.
- Experience managing client-facing projects, vendor coordination, project timelines, budgets, and deliverables.
- Experience supporting clients across multiple sites or distributed environments.
- IT, networking, cloud, cybersecurity, or vendor certifications.
- Ability to accept occasional evening, weekend, holiday, urgent, or onsite project opportunities when offered and accepted.
Rates and Payment
Rates vary by project type, urgency, location, skill level, and agreed scope. Rate and payment terms will be confirmed in writing before each accepted engagement.
Some non-client project work may be offered under separate written scopes at different rates. Contractors may accept or decline those opportunities.
Contractors are not eligible for employee benefits, paid time off, paid sick leave, unemployment insurance through the company, workers’ compensation coverage as employees, or guaranteed future engagements.
Future Opportunities
This 1099 opportunity does not guarantee or imply future employment, equity, profit sharing, partnership, ownership, or continuing engagement.
If the company later has a need for regular schedules, supervised work, internal operations, staff management, business development, team leadership, equity participation, profit sharing, or company-building responsibilities, those opportunities will be evaluated separately and documented under the appropriate legal structure, such as W2 employment, partnership, equity agreement, profit-sharing agreement, or another counsel-reviewed arrangement.
Ideal Contractor
The ideal contractor is a senior-level independent IT consultant or IT services business that can assess client environments, communicate clearly, take ownership of defined technical outcomes, and complete accepted work without day-to-day supervision.
This opportunity is especially well suited for a Sacramento-area consultant who already provides IT services independently and is interested in occasional project-based engagements, client support work, or senior technical consulting opportunities.
