Full Job Description

The Chief Building Engineer is responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of the hospital’s physical infrastructure and building systems. This role oversees the maintenance, repair, and operation of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and other critical facility systems that support patient care, staff operations, and visitor safety.

This is a hands-on leadership role. The Chief Building Engineer is expected to serve as a working chief engineer, actively participating in maintenance and repair work while also supervising staff, maintaining schedules, assigning work orders, and ensuring timely completion of department responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:

Facility Maintenance and Repairs

Perform and oversee routine inspections, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs for hospital building systems, including electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, and related infrastructure.
Respond promptly to maintenance requests and ensure issues are resolved efficiently to minimize disruption to hospital operations.
Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, equipment status, repair history, inspections, and completed work orders.
Serve as a working Chief Building Engineer by actively assisting with hands-on maintenance, repairs, and troubleshooting as needed.

Staff Scheduling and Work Order Management

Maintain staff schedules to ensure adequate coverage for daily operations, preventive maintenance, emergencies, and on-call needs.
Assign, prioritize, and monitor work orders to ensure timely completion and proper documentation.
Provide direction, support, and technical guidance to engineering and maintenance staff.
Follow up on assigned work to verify quality, safety, and completion standards.

Emergency Response

Be available for on-call duties and respond promptly to emergency situations, including power outages, equipment failures, plumbing issues, HVAC failures, and other facility-related incidents.
Coordinate with hospital staff, contractors, vendors, and external service providers during emergency situations to resolve issues effectively and minimize operational disruptions.

Compliance and Safety

Ensure building systems and equipment are maintained in accordance with applicable safety, health, environmental, local, state, and federal regulations.
Conduct regular safety inspections, identify potential hazards, and take appropriate corrective action to maintain a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
Support compliance with hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and applicable building codes.

Equipment Procurement and Budget Support

Work with hospital leadership and procurement teams to evaluate equipment needs, research options, and recommend purchases, repairs, or replacements.
Assist in preparing and managing the building engineering department budget, including maintenance contracts, equipment purchases, repair costs, and operational expenses.

Project Management

Oversee construction, renovation, and infrastructure-related projects involving hospital building systems.
Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and internal teams to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project requirements, timelines, and quality standards.

Qualifications and Requirements

Previous experience as a building engineer, chief engineer, facilities supervisor, or facilities manager, preferably in a healthcare or hospital setting.
Strong working knowledge of building systems, including electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, and life safety systems.
Experience assigning work orders, maintaining staff schedules, and overseeing maintenance staff.
Ability and willingness to perform hands-on maintenance and repair work as a working Chief Building Engineer.
Understanding of applicable building codes, safety regulations, environmental standards, and healthcare facility requirements.
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, specifications, and equipment manuals.
Strong troubleshooting, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, urgent requests, and ongoing maintenance needs.
