Job Summary
Responsible for maintaining clean, professional, and efficient kennel programs, facilities, and grounds. Responsible for assisting with hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating personnel under your direction to provide humane care for the animals and accomplishing the goals established for the Animal Humane health care program as directed by the Animal Care Manager (ACM), Senior Shelter Care Manager (SSCM), and Director of Lifesaving Programs (DLP).
Responsibilities
· Maintain a safe, clean environment for pets and the public by following cleaning standard operating procedures. Ensure the constant cleanliness and sanitation of all areas and equipment associated with the Animal Care department.
· Maintain an accurate animal inventory by efficiently conducting Daily Count for pets on main campus. Run medication and booster reports and delegate tasks to ensure all pets have up to date medical records.
· Evaluate and recommend when Animal Care Attendants (ACAs) have mastered specific goals and follow a progress plan related to the AC Training Binder.
· Provide constant humane treatment and handling of pets, especially during administration of medications.
· Train department staff in areas of animal health, breed recognition, and physical examinations, performing vaccinations and microchipping. Accurately identify pet breeds, ages, and sexes.
· Coordinate with ACM, SSCM, and DLP on animal care issues as they arise.
· Maintain euthanasia certification.
· Assist ACM in the control and recording of drugs and supplies used in the department.
· Ability to identify common infectious diseases in pets and report symptoms to the veterinary team promptly.
· Work as a team with all areas of Animal Humane, ensuring collaboration with our Core Values in mind.
· Maintain office and medical supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level and verify receipt of supplies.
· Maintain personnel records to document coaching, training, and employee development for the Animal Care Attendants and Leads on your shift.
· Collaborate with ACM regarding corrective measures to improve performance and assist with preparing annual appraisals.
· Participate in at least thirty (30) hours of cross training in the Veterinary Clinic to expand medical skills.
· Demonstrate leadership of staff and volunteers through hands-on training and teaching. This includes training in the processing of incoming pets, proper handling when medicating pets, and other job duties.
· Responsible for assisting with interviewing and recommending hiring of Animal Care employees; direct on the job training to develop employee skills; resolve informal employee complaints.
· Attending meetings as needed and disseminating information to department staff as needed to maintain effective communication.
· Accurately use Office Suite, Windows, and shelter management software.
· Perform other duties as assigned by ACM, SSCM, and DLP.
Job Conditions
Indoor/Outdoor facility often exposed to the elements. The activity includes both seated office duties as well as animal management activities, which may include handling and restraint of animals that are fractious or excited. This includes pets that may weigh over 50 pounds. Some of the work is done standing, kneeling, walking, and bending. Urine and feces are often present, as are a variety of hazardous chemical agents. Workers are exposed to animal bites, various viruses, needles, and other sharp objects. Regularly exposed to strong and pungent odors.
Department employees, volunteers, community service workers, patrons, vendors, and general public. Supervision of department personnel and volunteers required.
Job Requirements
Typically requires high school education or equivalent and excellent written and oral communication skills. Some computer experience required. Graduate of animal health/technician school preferred.
Typically requires 1-3 years’ experience in a supervisory position.
